According to the CTIA wireless Association:

Wireless Subscribers: 194.5 million U.S. Subscribers

Wireless Penetration: Over 65 percent of total U.S. Population

CTIA: October 2005
http://files.ctia.org/pdf/Wireless_Quick_Facts_October_05.pdf

U.S. Population: 297,760,562
http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html

Therefore about 193.5 million Americans use cell phones.

I hope the information provided is helpful!

Best regards,
Bobbie

In my experience (which may be skewed from living by a DC), almost 10%
of cell phone users have 2 cell phones. I don't think this is
accounted for in Bobbie's answer.

If the number is around 10% then Wireless Penetration is around 60%...
and about 175 million Americans use cell phones.

I agree Dream, cell phones are pricey...

but around DC everyone has "the most important job ever" and either
work provides them a cell or they have a cell strictly for work in
addition to their family/personal cell phone.

I have 3 cell phones. Two in the US - one is a pay as you go for
visitors, and one in the UK. IMHO it's not the phone cost that's high
but the charges, it's certainly cheaper to keep a separate phone than
to pay extortionate roaming charges.

And as for paying for incoming calls - that totally sucks - especially
as PAYG Cingular numbers are recycled too quickly and twice, I have
paid for a dozen or so calls for previous owners of my PAYG numbers.
