Hello, I have a need to rename the default folders in Outlook XP on Windows 2000 (We are running Exchange 5.5 servers). I have been running into the problem documented in Microsoft Article Q292980. When Outlook is opened for a newly created mailbox for some individuals, Calendar is renamed to Calendar1 and a new Calendar folder is created that contains mail items instead of appointment items. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q292980 I have had limited success with this solution, and I have previously obtained a copy of the Exchange 5.0 Outlook Client exchng32.exe (the file version of this is 5.0.1457.3). I only have this file, I do not have the entire Windows Messaging distribution. This does the job I need done, however, it only will open on Win95, 98 and NT. On Windows 2000, it will display the splash screen for a split second and close. We do not use Windows XP, so this is not an option. What I am trying to obtain is a copy of the Windows Messaging for Windows 2000. I have called Microsoft Premier Support a couple of times, but have not been able to obtain a copy of this. I found a Microsoft article referring this application on Q254448, but it says Microsoft must be contacted to obtain this. Is there a website someplace where I can download this distribution, or a copy of a newer version of exchng32.exe that is Windows 2000 compatible? Premier offered Windows Messaging 4.0 for NT, but it will not run on Windows 2000, either. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q254458 Unfortunately, I do not have access to the Exchange 5.5 distribution that is used, so cannot obtain any files from this. The individuals that support this have not been able to locate this distribution, either. We are using Office XP without service packs -- upgrading to SR-1 or SR-2 is also not an option, as we there are compatibility issues encountered. Thanks, Gambo |

This usually happens after a migration using the migration wizard, and the source system has the same folder name as the target system such as in Notes to Exchange migrations. While you can jump though all the hoops and use the old messaging client, the best tool is ffolder.exe - here is the text from the program: Ffolder.exe Version 1.01 Readme ------------------------------- Ffolder.exe is a utility to rename or delete mapi folders. It was designed to be a quick, easy way to rename or delete "special" folders such as the Calendar, Tasks, Inbox, and Contacts. For various reasons, once in a while these special folders get renamed or have bad data in them and need to be deleted and recreated. You are not allowed to rename or delete these folders from within outlook, so you can instead use ffolder.exe Warning: You can use ffolder.exe to delete your inbox. If you delete your inbox (or any other folder), it does NOT get moved to the deleted items folder, it is permanently deleted. So use the utility with care. Ffxolder.exe requires that CDO be installed. If it is not installed you can use Outlook setup and Add it as a component. It also requries the VB6 runtime DLL which you most likely already have if you are running office. Finally it requires that outlook be running. Usage: --------- 1. Launch the program. 2. OK the requirements dialog. 3. Click the Pick Folder Button. This should display a folder picker dialog box. If it does not, then manually switch to the Outlook window by clicking on Outlook in the task bar and the pick folder window should "come to the front" and be visible. 4. Pick the folder you want to delete or rename and press OK. 5. To delete the folder, click "Attempt Delete". 6. To rename the folder, type a new name, then click "Attempt Rename". You should be asked for confirmation for either action, and then CDO will try to do the rename or deletion. I make no warantee of any kind on this EXE. Its provided as a sample of how to use CDO to affect MAPI folders. Use of it is entirely at your own risk. I have also included the VB6 form so that you can see exactly what the code does. Since it is not possible to post a file here, please email me directly for the program at dmoore @ dmoore.com |

Thanks for the recommendation, Dmoore. I actually found this utility a couple weeks after posting this question, http://www.slipstick.com/addins/gallery/, and it does exactly what I was looking for. It turned out that only Outlook XP handles CDO properly -- I wasn't able to get this utility to run on the Outlook 98 or 2000 clients at all the way they come preinstalled on all of our machines, or even after installing VB6. I can use the old exchng32.exe program on them just fine, so it all worked out. Thanks! Gambo |
