Hello and thank you. I am planning on getting married in Peru. I am
told I need the equivalent of a "certificado de solteria", basically a
document stating that I am legally allowed to be wed. I know that we
do not have this document in the united states as the laws are
different, but I need to have an equivalent, issued in this country.
Please tell me where I can find this, in this country, as I know the
american embassy in Lima issues equivalents, but I need something
issued here. Thank you for your time.

MArio55,

In New York the certificate of non impediment is available atthe
Office of the City Clerk.

Here is Office of the City Clerk in Los Angeles.
http://cityclerk.lacity.org/

Since this Certificate is issued upon request I would suggest you call
them at 213-978-1020.

Please let me know if they will issue the certificate and then I will
post this information as your official answer and collect the fee.

Sincerely,
Bobbie7

If you are a resident of Los Angeles, it appears that you'll need to
contact the county with your request:

"Certificate of No Public Marriage
Certain circumstances, including marriages in foreign countries, may
require applicants to obtain a 'Certificate of No Public Marriage
Record' to confirm that the applicants have never been married in
their state of residence.

The State of California cannot provide the 'Certificate of No Public
Marriage Record.' As an alternative, we suggest that those persons who
have been asked to provide a 'Certificate of No Public Marriage
Record' may wish to contact their county of residence to request a
'Certificate of No Public Marriage Record' for that county...

Due to budgetary and staffing constraints, and their effect on our
electronic database for marriage registration, the State of California
is unable to perform a complete search of all marriage records. As a
result, the State is not able to issue a Certificate of No Public
Marriage Record."

about contacting the county.

Did you try to ask someone at the embassy here in DC?
