How can I distribute my Vonage phone service throughout my house WITHOUT using the existing copper wiring I used for plain old telephone service? I can get Ethernet to anywhere in the house, but the existing phone wiring is a mess. Could I use Cisco IP phones (or any other brand of IP phone) with Vonage or use a second Vonage box in my home? To clarify, my goal is to connect all my existing telephony devices (tivo, phones) to Vonage OR connect just the Tivo to the supplied Vonage box and use other IP Phones OR add additional Vonage boxes. |

I do this now - Vonage business service with voice and fax, Cisco 2610XM with NM-2V, VIC-2FXS, VIC-2FXO, and I have a CP-7960 phone on my desk. You will *not* like the price tag for this sort of play, as its a four digit number and the first digit is not a one. Are you *sure* you don't want to learn how to make ethernet and phone behave on the same cable? pins 4, 5, 7, and 8 are free ... |

I'm hoping to stay away from a four digit price tag. In fact, I'm hoping to barely break a three digit price tag. Anyway, I can get Ethernet anywhere in my house by using hacked Linksys WRT54Gs. Using the Sveasoft firmware I can mesh them all together. So, although I have ethernet everywhere, I can't use the spare pairs in the cable to run phone service. I was hoping to get some IP phone equipment off eBay for use in the house. Unfortunatly I don't know much about the VOIP protocols, so I don't know what to buy, and what will work together, and whether I can use use multiple Vonage VOIP boxes with the same Vonage account. |

Depending on the size of your home, you could do what I have done in my house. I Have the Vonage adapter next to my Tivo, to connect it, and then I bought a cordless phone system. It's has a single base and that base supports multiple phones (mine supports 4, but I have seen home models that support up to 8) You could very easily purchase one of these and the additional handsets while keeping the cost in the lower 3 figures. If you decide to go with this option, you may want to read this article on interferance between corldless phones and 802.11 networks before deciding on which model cordless phone system you go with. http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/2191241 Hope this helps Agonizing Fury |

did your vontage box come with an ata? if so your in luck.. all you have to do is go outside disconnect the phone line from where it enteres your house then take a phone cord from your vontage ata box and plug it into the nearest phone line outlet then anyphone in your house will work off that ata.. |
