Last night on public TV there was a show "Journey of Man" which contended that all 6 billion humans are descended from one lucky guy who lived in Africa about 60,000 years ago. Who was that lucky guy's dad? |

Hi, That "lucky guy's" dad was just that....his dad. Evolution does not occur in noticeable leaps and bounds. It is a very gradual process, therfore, if one were to travel back in time, one would not notice any evolutionary difference between "lucky guy" and his dad. The following link is a concise (if somewhat simplified) explanation of The Theory of Evolution. http://www.geocities.com/plecoboy88/Evolution.html Happy thinking. |

The idea that everyone came from a single individual is a bit misleading: typically they are following not total genetic contribution, but the inheritance of genes on the Y chromosome, which gets passed directly through the male line of descent. If two men leave equal numbers of offspring, but one has only daughters, then his Y chromosme is permanently lost from future generations. While he has contributed an equal amoiunt of genes, only the other person will show up when analysing the Y chromosome. |

Thank you both for your comments. I did read the article about the theroy of evolution, and as you indicated, it was basic and brief. The prime example in that article was the Siamese cat. I have the best breed of cat, a Bengal, which has only be in existence for about 50 years. When I behold my cat, it does make me believe in evolution while simultaneously making me believe in God. I can do this without any cognitive dissonance just as I can simultaneously believe in both nture and nurture. I am excited. I just received my Genographic kit in the mail. Turns out the lucky guy has a name. It is Adam. There is also an Eve. However, Eve lived about 150,000 years ago. Funny thing, I always thought that Adam came first and that they were contemporaries. oh well, live and learn. This may help me clarify my question. Was Adam a direct descendent of Eve's? Were they very similar? Why the 90,000 year difference? And, of course, who was Eve's mama? |
