I'm wondering if anyone can help me better understand the concept of a
score vector and how it relates to the variance, log likelihood
function, residuals, and gradient.

At this point, I understand that the score vector is the partial
derivative of the log likelihood function with respect to a parameter,
but I'm having a hard time conceptualizing what this means.
