Shipbreaking is the demolition of old ships with the purpose of
recycling as much material as possible. Alang on the east coast of
Gujarat is the most notorious place (see link below), Mumbai,
Chittagong are other shipbreaking sites in that area. In America,
Brownsville, Texas, seems to be leading (see link), as well as a few
other places in the States and Canada.

It is a dirty and dangerous business, not just for the workers but
also for the environment, which is the reason for major activity in
Alang, where employee safety measures and environmental controls are
weak. (Sorry, if this seems to be criticism of your country.) The
Chinese do it too.
It is a big industry and will stay around as long as there are ships.
