last time i checked, k.d. lang, sinead o'conner and traci chapman were not men. Also, sigfreid and roy are 2 people, with actual last names. Also, Ian McKellon is listed twice. I just noticed the k.d. lang one so i looked more closely...I don't actually have any interest in a list of gay men :p |

Chirstopher Marlow is also listed twice. Sappho was a lesbian, and Anne Heche is reported to be married to a man - and looks like a female who would make many a man's heart beat faster. http://www.askmen.com/women/actress_150/151c_anne_heche.html Well, it seems that she did have a lesbian affair, but that doesn't make her a homosexual male. Anyway, if Gaydate is happy with the list, he's the customer. Cheers, Myoarin |

Morrissey was in the above list. For the record it should be noted that Morrissey has never made a definitive statement about his sexuality. From an interview with an Australian radio station on April 7 1985 : Q: Well, there was that quote in, what was it, ("Here we go, here we go...") Rolling Stone, that you were gay or something like that. A: "Yes, I know." Q: That kind of a...you being picked up on by the gay movement. I mean, in retrospect a...how do you view that? A: "Well, I just think it's all so untrue and I think it's so unfair, I mean, obviously, any kind of a tag, I'll dodge. I'll really dodge any kind of a tag, whatever it is. But... I don't want to be shoved in to a box and put on...put in a category. That's not the whole point but, I mean, that person said that I was gay, and he'd never asked me, he never approached the subject and he himself was a very loud and strong voice in the American gay movement and I think it was really just wishful thinking on his part but ultimately people will see what they want to see in the whole aspect of what I do and my motivations. I'm not embarrassed about the word 'gay' but it's not in the least bit relevant. I'm beyond that frankly." ### Placing Morrissey in a list of gay celebs would currently therefore be incorrect -- unless anyone has any imperical evidence to prove the contratry. Suggestions that he might be gay are all conjecture or anecdotal. It is at least worth giving Morrissey the benefit of the doubt until such time he akes a statement. |

After reviewing the list again, I get the impression that it comes from sources eager to include as many noted men as possible (no fault of Bobbie's). The story of David and Jonathan, for example, does lend itself to this interpretation, but nothing else in David's career supports a claim of his homosexuality, especially not the story of Uriah and Bathsheba. Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting, did not get married until he was 55, but then to a 23 year-old woman and had three children with her. That hardly describes a confirmed homosexual, regardless of the evidence of his visual appreciation of youths. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Baden-Powell Myoarin |

on Plato

Although Plato (and many ancient Greek authors, for that matter) often used homoerotic imagery in his writings, I'm not sure I would label him as homosexual. He condemns homosexual practice in the Laws and he also speaks against consumating erotic urges in the Phaedrus. While homosexual activity was probably common among the ancient greeks, Plato's use of homoerotic imagery seems to be more of an issue of mysogyny (seeing women as lower than men) than homosexuality. |

Baden-Powell was a married man and never came out as a homosexual. He cannot be included in this list. He was the founder of the Scout Movement and a committed christian. |

Should John Holmes be included on this list? Yes, it is true that he did appear in one bisexual film having sex with another man. There are also rumors that he would have sex with men in exchange for money. However, these activities were more about paying for his severe drug addiction than they were about his personal enjoyment. I guess what I am saying is that a distinction needs to be made between having had gay sex and being gay. Being gay seems to be more about who you fall in love with than who you have sex with. In John Holmes case, it is true that he had sex with men in exchange for money. However, he had a whole lot more sex with women for money. Also, in his offscreen life, all of his romantic relationships were with women. (I'm currently reading a history of the adult film industry, that's why I know all this so readily.) Though, I do find it interesting that if a man is known to have had just one gay sex experience, most people assume he is gay even if all of his other relationships have been with women. However, the reverse rarely seems to be asserted. For example, Freddy Mercury was once married and presumably had sex with his wife. You will have to search for a very long time before you will find somebody who thinks that Freddy is secretly straight because of this relationship. In summary, a few gay sex experiences does not necessarily mean a gay man. A man falling love with another man though...I would consider that to be the basis of being gay, not the sex. |
