There is a smell of dog pee in my house, but for the life of me I
cannot find where it is coming from. I have tried sniffing every
corner of the house, but I cannot find the source. Is there a pair of
goggles or something I can use to see the pee odor? It would also be
fun to use these goggles to determine who really let one go at my next
Thanksgiving dinner, or to absolve the dog of consistent blame.

Thanks,

Jeff

I don't think you can see an odor, but urine stains fluoresce under
ultraviolet light (black light).

"Urine-Off UV Urine-Finder Black Light
   Black Light $18.50 HBUOC
Is your home ?Black Light Clean?? Use this handy 6.5 inch UV Black
Light to find all those stubborn odor-causing urine stains. Urine
fluoresces a dull yellow under this Black Light. Use the Urine-Finder
Black Light to be certain you are cleaning all the odors and stains ?
saving time, money and effort!"

You could try and find someone with synesthesia: specifically someone
who's sense of smell triggers visual effects

Do goggles or glasses not exist? I thought we lived in the great age
of technology. Odors are gases, surely we have goggles that can see
gases. Does anyone know how I can get my hands on a pair?

Use the black light again, but look on hard floor surfaces, walls, and
cracks. Black lights DO make pet urine visible. The room must be very
dark though.

I owned a carpet & upholstery cleaning company for 7 years, this is
the method used to detect urine...

I tried the black light everywhere, but I did not find the pee. And
it stinks in that part of the house!

I'm stumped. You could buy some Microban and treat all the surfaces.
If there's urine there, Microban will get rid of the smell. You can
find it in the Yellow Pages under "Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning -
SUPPLIERS" They will sell to the general public. This product is FAR
better than the stuff you can buy in the grocery store. Don't dilute
it. It's about $25.00 a gallon, you might need 2 gallons.

I forgot to mention, it's possible the urine was removed from the
carpet and is still in the pad. That would be a very unfortunate
situation, because not knowing where the urine WAS in the carpet, you
won't know where to pull up carpet to replace a small portion of the
pad. Obviously replacing the entire pad would be very costly.

Did you recently buy the house? How long have you been aware of the
problem? How did you become aware of it? Do you have a pet? (I'm
confused, please enlighten me so I can help)

Forget the goggle idea. If you can stand to live there, the number of
urine molecules in the air must be a few parts per million: the nose
is very sensitive.

But why not try a low-tech approach? After all, what better instrument
could there be to localize the source of dog urine smell than the nose
of another dog? Especially a dog of the opposite sex. Try bringing in
a different dog and watch where it sniffs a lot, especially in the
first hour. Watch out though, it might try to "mark" the spot with its
own urine.

Even better might be to try a dog of the opposite sex, or both sexes
if the sex of the source urine is unknown. If the dog(s) sniff
everywhere and don't linger anywhere, you might need a dog that is
trained to stop and signal when the source of a smell is found. This
might overcome the carpet pad problem mentioned by Cynthia. Or, just
take up the carpet and look at its underside and on the pad for
stains. A big job, but it sounds like an unacceptable situation.

Also, is your "black light from Walmart" a good enough source of UV to
do the job? Test it in complete darkness on a known urine-stained area
(e.g. toilet in an interior bathroom). If you do have a confirmed
effective UV source, try examining the cracks and undersurface of the
flooring from the basement in total darkness; you might get lucky.

You can get a divice called a MIRAN which is a portable infrared
spectrometer. It can be used to sniff the air around various
localities and determine the origin of any particular odour. However,
you need a suitable reference or someone who knows what they are
looking for to tune the intrument. Try analytical companies that
supply MIRAN or mobile infrared instruments.
The coment about fluorescence of pee under UV is correct but it needs
to be a decent UV light giving a wide band of UV spectrum and suitable
googles to observe the fluorescence.

I mushed dogs in Alaska for years, and was a Race Official on the
Iditarod. I agree with "ayres-ga" regarding bringing in another dog.
A 'full-male' WILL find that urine in your house, just watch closely
for his interest points. Make sure he's not distracted.

This will work -- especially if you have an 'interpreter' for the new
dog. Basically a 'dog whisperer' who knows their body languages.

ayres, Brilliant idea , --another dog, opposite sex, I won't forget
that! Also, to test the black light with a known source. Perfect!
I'd do that first, then find a dog second...

Well, you can't see the smell, but instead, you certainly know there
is some chemical elements in pee, right? so, you can go to a hospital
or some places like that to buy kind of chemicals, like the thing that
police use to show cleaned blood.
Sorry that I can't remember that element's name, but you can get that
name anywhere.
Hope I can help you.
