Hospital stats are generally presented as "number of hospital beds per
100,000 population", rather than the actual number of hospitals, per
se.
Not all countries have this particular statistic available. A partial
country by country listing looks like this:
>>Number of hospital beds per 10000 population<<
Afghanistan 4
Albania 31
Andorra 33
Antigua and Barbuda 25
Argentina 41
Armenia 44
Australia 40
Austria 83
Azerbaijan 83
Bahamas 34
Bahrain 28
Bangladesh 3
Barbados 21
Belarus 113
Belgium 70
Belize 13
Bhutan 16
Bolivia 10
Bosnia and Herzegovina 31
Brazil 27
Brunei Darussalam 26
Bulgaria 63
Cambodia 5
Canada 44
Chile 26
China 25
Colombia 11
Cook Islands 71
Costa Rica 14
Croatia 56
Cuba 49
Cyprus 44
Czech Republic 86
Democratic People's Republic of Korea 136
Denmark 41
.
.
.
and so on.
Would the full table meet your needs?

I had previously found that data via the WHO. Ideally, I'm looking
for number of actual institutions as I'm building a report around
potential for linking actually hospitals into a satellite
communications network. Essentially, I looking for approximately the
max number of satellite dishes we would need to dispense.

dhay55,
Would the data offered at Dorland Health suit your purpose?

It certainly seems so. In my research, I was able to come across the
South American numbers...but if you could find the numbers for N.
America, Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and Asia...this would suit my
needs.

I think the Dorland Health site has more of what I'm looking for.
Hospital Web doesn't appear to have a comprehensive list as some of
their info conflicts with what Dorland has published. For example,
Dorland Health lists Chile as having 396 hospitals. Hospital Web
lists 2 hospitals for Chile. Just to restate exactly what I need and
why:
I'm looking for a total number, by country, of hospitals in S. America
(which I have), Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. I work for a
not-for-profit that aims to linking hospitals into our medical
educational network (satellite television) in an effort to raise the
level of care around the world. I need this info to put together a
report on what our maximum needs will be in terms of hardware as well
as what we can expect for maximum potential viewership.
Thanks. If I can get a complete answer, I'll be more than happy to
throw in a very nice tip.

And is this information "real"...I notice that it says "Sample" at the
top. Is this strictly an example of what this company can provide, or
is this the actual tally of hospitals per country?

Yes it says ?Sample of information held? but it also says
Extract from "IHF Database of Hospitals"
I don?t believe that these are made up numbers.
I checked the numbers from Canada and United States.
From an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
?There are more than 2,000 hospitals in Canada.?
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/trib/regional/s_388982.html
From the Environmental Protection Agency:
?There are approximately 7,000 hospitals in the United States.?
http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/129/hmiwi/hmiwifs.html
The data from the extract from "IHF Database of Hospitals" appears to
match the data that is publicly available.

Thanks for all the work. I tend to think the difference in the two
numbers for the US is due to the fact that the lower doesn't include
VA hospitals. There are roughly 750-800 VA hospitals in the US. I
consider the question to be fully answered. Great job.
