Question ID: 600221
I am looking for a list of Operations Managers with a financial
services background (banks, thrifts, finance company, credit union,
etc). Some of the banks I would be interested in would be Sovereign
Bank, Ohio Savins Bank, Western Bank, United Bank, Chevy Chase Bank,
Associated Bank, Household Finance, HSBC, Bank of America and others.
Generally the titles would be operations Manager

Hello Maggiep-ga,

It is much clearer for both questioner and answerer to work on a
finite list. Please clarify, are the banks you mentioned that finite
list? Or else, they have to be included in a larger list? If so, how
many records do you expect? Thank you.

Guillermo

This could start as the finite list but a much more inclusive list
would be advantageous to my search.

Thanks for your reply. Before going ahead, please tell me how many
records do you expect for a complete answer. Thank you.

Clarification of Question by maggiep-ga on 02 Dec 2005 07:48 PST
Since I am most interested in the banks in the West, I would say that
the data should include minimally the banks of I have mentioned
earlier and all operations managers in banks in the West including
Nevada, California, Arizona, etc. thanks

Hello Maggiep-ga,

I'm willing to start working on your question as soon as I finish
another project I'm already engaged in. In the meantime, the question
remains open so that any fellow researcher who thinks that can help
you might answer before. This question expires on December 31 so
that's the default deadline we assume but if you have a closer
deadline you may want to let us know. Thank you.

Clarification of Question by maggiep-ga on 07 Dec 2005 04:51 PST
I am not sure what you need clarified. List of operations managers in
retail banks, some specific banks I have listed and then requested
more. If you are looking for a finite number, let's go with 100. I
do need a response to this question by the end of the week. I am
working on a project and it is due on Monday. If unable to complete
please let me know and I will cancel my request. I guess I should
have mentioned up front that I needed an immediate response. thanks
for your help and let me know if this deadline can't be met. d esl

Thanks for specifying your deadline. Let me suggest you this: I can
tell you by tomorrow Dec 8, 1 PM PST whether I can meet your needs in
time or not.

In the meantime, it may happen that a fellow researcher has begun to
work on your question (a lock icon in your question would let you
know). If so, all posts in this section will be taken into account by
any researcher -- including your deadline requirements and my proposal
to inform you about the feasibility by tomorrow Dec 8, 1 PM PST.

Please let me know if this isn't good enough so that we can consider
alternatives. Thank you,

Guillermo

Hello Maggiep-ga,

In order to test the feasibility of your requirement I used your short
list of preferred banks as a sample. Among the nine banks of the list,
I could find the names of operation managers (or similar) for
Sovereign Bank, Associated Bank, HSBC Bank USA and Bank of America,
but not for the others. Also, not in all cases it was possible to
access a biography or CV in order to confirm financial background.

It took me about one hour and a half to check 9 banks and find 4
results. I can invest about 15 more hours in this project, what means
that you can expect about 40 results for about 90 banks checked --
that is, if the rate of successful searches remains the same for the
large list, otherwise you may get more or less results -- say 30 or
50. If this is OK for you, I can have that list ready late tomorrow or
Saturday morning. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Thank you so much. Let' move forward. Also, I have realized that
sometimes these people hold titles like Relationship Manager or
Business Liasion and they work in the Operations area within banks. I
am very anxious to receive the list which will allow me to pull
together the presentation by Monday, my deadline. Let's do it!

Hello Maggiep-ga,

Before going further, I need to clarify this. It is very rare the bank
that makes available information about their staff other than senior
executives -- and often they don't show information about their staff
at all. For the purpose of your project, would a COO (Chief Operation
Officer) be considered an "operation manager"? Thanks.

Hello Maggiep-ga,

I guess you haven't seen my last request for clarification so far.
Notwithstanding, I went on with my search under the assumption of an
affirmative answer to my request -- which I consider the most likely
-- my question was meant just as a confirmation.

However, the job is taking me some more time than I foresaw -- not
much, but enough to delay its delivery until tomorrow Sunday (as early
as I can). I hope this is OK ... it's still before Monday :) Sorry,
anyway.

Hello Maggiep-ga,

As often happens, the job proved to be more time consuming than
estimated. I had foreseen that reviewing about 90 banks I would obtain
at least 30 positive results. I could review 85, to obtain 32 positive
results.

You'll have first the list of 32 positive results. Some of them
include a biographic excerpt, very few an email address.

To find the banks of each western state, I used mainly the AAAdir
Directory for US (http://www.aaadir.com/states.jsp ) and alternatively
the Business Line's bank directory for US
(http://www.business-line.com/fibanks/americas/usa/usa.htm ),
considering only banks (as opposed to credit unions and trust services
firms). I tried to filter the banks original for each state (as
opposed to those for having branches in it), but not in all cases it
was possible to do so in a reasonable reviewing time. However, I don't
thing that I've miss the filtering in many cases, if any.

Also, I used the same criterion of "reasonable time review" - while in
a thorough manner - in order to decide whether the position required
could be found or not in the bank's website. Sometimes, there seemed
to be no information about corporate officers at all; other times, no
operation manager or presumably equivalent position was found.
Occasionally, one or more positions with other names seemed to cover
the corresponding functions and I included them in the list.

After the 32 positive records' list, there's a complementary list of
the remnant 53 that I reviewed with no result, just for your control.
For both lists, I grouped the results by state.

I hope my work met your needs. If any clarification is required,
please ask for it. Good luck with you project!

Sincerely,

Guillermo

Request for Answer Clarification by maggiep-ga on 12 Dec 2005 07:43 PST
You had suggested that I would hear from you on Friday the 10th at 8
a.m. Since I did not get any information from you all day on Friday,
I assumed you would not have anything back to me until Monday morning.
I did not get your clarification question but the answer is NO. I
do not need operations officer titles. Those are readily available
all over the web. My assumption is that you would be able to provide
me with the "right hand person" or the Operations Managers listing of
names ---people who report into the Operations Manager. I am not sure
you have fulfilled my request. Where do we go from here?

Hello Maggiep-ga,

I'm really concerned about the situation. I'll respond to your request by parts.

>Maggiep-ga:
"You had suggested that I would hear from you on Friday the 10th at 8
a.m. Since I did not get any information from you all day on Friday,
I assumed you would not have anything back to me until Monday
morning."

There is a misunderstanding about that. Actually, I had said:

("Request for Question Clarification by guillermo-ga on 08 Dec 2005 11:54 PST")
(...)
"If this is OK for you, I can have that list ready late tomorrow
[referring to Friday 9th] or Saturday [10th] morning."

Also, my request for clarification about the operation managers' level
was posted on Friday "09 Dec 2005 13:22 PST".

This was just to clarify the communication timing. However, there's no
big deal about it -- if you couldn't see the clarification request is
nobody's fault, no matter how early I posted it :) I just wanted to
leave it aside, so we can focus on the main point, that is, whether
the answer fulfills your request or not.

>Maggiep-ga:
"I did not get your clarification question but the answer is NO. I do
not need operations officer titles. Those are readily available all

I wonder whether you mean that you don't need COO's for your project
at all, or that you wouldn't ask someone to look for them because you
could find that by yourself. As a matter of fact, most of our work
consists in finding information available on the internet that our
customers do not have the time to do by themselves (but many could if
they had it). This search took me 20 working hours that you probably
didn't have, because you have your tasks. Mine is finding the
information for you, so that you can do yours. Maybe we also have more
developed searching skills because that is what we do, but we cannot
find what there isn't, and information of bank managers (not only
operation ones) below the level of senior executives is definitely not
available on the internet (eventual exceptions left aside).

Moreover, please note that even for the senior management, only less
than 40% of the bank websites reviewed had the information, and many
of them not easily available. Really -- I had to dig in extended
annual reports and press releases to find it, in many cases.

>Maggiep-ga:
"My assumption is that you would be able to provide me with the 'right
hand person' or the Operations Managers listing of names ---people who
report into the Operations Manager."

I wish I could meet your assumption but unfortunately, given what I
said above, that is not possible. Really, I would very much like to
help you further, with the same good will I had to take the job to
meet your deadline. But the fact is that this is not feasible within
this framework. Had it been explicit in the original question or our
dialog that you focused on intermediate management, I had stayed off.
I reckon that such a search would require and extensive (and
expensive), medium-term survey, with the cooperation of the banks
themselves -- obviously exceeding the scope of this service.

>Maggiep-ga:
"I am not sure you have fulfilled my request. Where do we go from here?"

It depends on a few factors to consider:

- About the information itself, regardless how much I wish I could, I
can't help you any further -- such information is simply not available
on the internet, and obtaining it would require an expensive project
beyond Google Answers' scope.

- As to the work done, it was based on the conditions explicited in
the original question. I did have a doubt about managers' level and
asked for clarification. Obviously, it didn't reach you -- too bad.
Now, on one hand I had an unanswered doubt that I considered a nuance
rather than a critical factor that -- if so -- you would have
mentioned from the beginning. On the other, I had your deadline, and I
wouldn't put it in risk. Thus, I thought the right decision was to go
on because, after all, chief operation officers are a particular
segment of operation managers.

- Regarding the result delivered, the point is whether while lacking
the lower levels of operation managers, it still makes a useful input
for your project or not. If it does, I guess you'd still want to
accept the answer, despite some disappointment with respect to your
expectation. Now, if it doesn't meet your needs at all, you don't have
to get charged. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Guillermo

An additional thought, in a very practical spirit: Please consider
that many of the banks listed -- probably most -- are rather small
banks operating in a county level, even small towns. In those cases,
the chief operation officers would probably match exactly what you're
focusing in.

Hello Maggiep-ga,

Thank you for valuing my help and for your trust in our service. I
appreciate also your pointing out the time delay -- I guess you're
referring to the lapse between a message is posted and the user gets
emailed upon it. I'll comment the editors about this -- probably
something can be done to improve it. As to the communication in the
interpersonal sense, its quality is an aspect that Google Answers
particularly encourages us researchers to care about, and I'm glad to
hear I'm doing it well :)

I'm quite confident that the compiled data proves useful -- hope not to be wrong.

I look forward to see you asking again!

Regards,

Guillermo

This was really a trial on my part. I had heard great things about
this service and wanted to see what was available. I am please with
the communication (even though some of the questions came to me with a
time delay-probably not your fault, could be on our service
side)process and the clarification questions. I believe the end
point made is the critical one..since most of the named banks provided
may be smaller institutions, the person I am looking for may be in
this group. I appreciate your help and look forward to another
interchange as I learn more about this service. I think the real
rating will come when I complete my project and realize the end
results fo the effort.

What you want is in here - but perhaps a little pricey :

http://www.euromoneyplc.com/default.asp?page=4&productID=2865&VS=

I'm pretty sure it is the descendant of something I worked on many years ago.

I don't quite get the 'financial services background' bit, in banks
operations managers are like 'housekeepers' or 'butlers'
- they run the logistics, but are only tangentially involved in the real business.

Most of the ones I've met were 'home grown', but I should imagine
there is more job hopping in the USA
