You can move them, within Outlook Express (OE), to another
folder of your choosing, such as Sent Archives. Outlook
automatically locates them in a file on your hard drive
in a sub-folder of OE.
Each folder in OE has a separate file in this sub-folder
of OE. You can save any or all of these folder-files to
another folder on your hard drive or to a CDR. Each
folder-file will contain all the emails in the folder
by the same name in OE. These files will not be readable
outside of OE, but can be imported back into OE at a
later time.
Let me know what operating system (OS) you're using, and
I can point you more easily to the location of these files
in Windows Explorer.
If you want to save the emails so that you can easily
click on them and read them (in OE), you would have to
save them individually, by highlighting them or opening
them in OE and using the File -> Save As dialog to save
them to a folder of your choice on your hard drive.

I meant to add that saving the files containing the entire
folders from OE will not allow you to save, say, all emails
from the year 2005, unless you saved all the files at the
end of the year and then emptied all the folders in OE, to
start fresh in 2006.
If you want to save emails by way of knowing their dates,
the second method I gave you, for saving individual emails,
is the only way to do this precisely.

It will be more clear when you've seen where the files are.
The folder-files for OE in XP are located on your drive here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Nickname\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{762B016J2-A570-4230-8H1T-2NA89D2AA31G}\Microsoft
\Outlook Express
...where Nickname is your Windows logon ID and the bracketed
letter/number combination is different from the one above,
which I used as an example. If you have more than one Identity
using OE when that Nickname is logged on, you'll have more
than one bracketed letter/number directories under Identities.
If you browse that folder, you'll see a file with a .dbx
extension for every folder in OE. All the contents of your
Inbox folder in OE will be in the file Inbox.dbx.
There's also a larger file named Folders.dbx which contains
data that allows OE to assemble the other folder-files
into a directory when it opens them in the program.
If you want to archive all your email, just copy all the
files in that folder to a CDR or another folder (while
OE is shut down).
Again, you won't be able to read individual emails by
clicking on the .dbx files. You can only read them by
restoring these folder-files in OE. If you create a
folder in OE named Sent Archives and move all your
sent mail into that (within OE), you'll then find a
file named Sent Archives.dbx in the OE folder on your
hard drive. You could just backup that one file, but
it's easier to import these backups back into OE if
you simply backup everything in the OE folder together,
including the Folders.dbx file.
If you want, you can then open OE and delete all the
folders and emails you like, and start with a clean
slate, archiving again when you so desire.
If you want to save the emails so that you can easily
click on them and read them (in OE), you would have to
save them individually, by highlighting them or opening
them in OE and using the File -> Save As dialog to save
them to a folder of your choice on your hard drive.
Try it, and you'll see what I mean. In OE, highlight an
email and go to File -> Save As and save that email to
a folder where you can find it easily on your hard drive.
Or you can open the email, and that window will also
have a File -> Save As menu available to do the same.
These will be saved on your hard drive with an .eml
extension. With OE open or closed, you can click on
that file from your hard drive, and OE will open it
for you in its usual format, and you can read it
whenever you like. Even if you've deleted it from
within OE, you can always open the copy you've saved
on your hard drive.

Let me just add that, for doing what you talked about,
my choice would probably be to create a folder on my
hard drive named, say, Sent Emails. Then, every time
I sent an email that I wanted to save, I would go to
the Sent Items folder in OE, highlight the email and
Save As an .eml file in the Sent Emails folder on my
hard drive. Then I'd delete it from within OE.
This would give me a permanent archive of Sent emails
which would be completely independent of OE, easy to
further organize outside of OE, and incorruptible in
case OE somehow fails. Just clicking on them with a
working copy of OE on your system will open them in
readable format.
