I have a 29 year old daughter who has been a crystal meth abuser for
at least ten years. She also has a serious alcohol abuse problem. I am
extremely concerned that she is destroying her health, her life and
her soul and is subjecting herself to an increasingly high risk of
premature death. I am convinced that the only hope of saving her is to
get her into a drug/alcohol rehab program and somehow keep her there
for at least 30 days. With the help of some excellent research done
recently by Google's "crabcakes" I may now
have the means of persuading her that her life and health are in such
great jeopardy that she can not afford to wait any longer and must
enroll now in a drug rehab program. However, getting her to enroll in
a program and getting her to complete a program are two vastly
different challenges. She was in a program two years ago but walked
out after only about four days. Walking away from that program was
very easy for her because the program was near her home town and
therefore was near people she could persuade to "rescue" her. This
time I would like to put her into a program from which it would be
much more difficult for her to walk away. I checked on Sierra Tucson
and was very impressed with the quality of its program and thought it
would be ideal because it is located in the middle of a desert. The
extreme remoteness would obviously pose a substantial obstacle to my
daughter when she develops the inevitable desire to bolt from the
program to satisfy her craving for more crystal meth or more alcohol.
My hope is that if I can get her through the detox period that lasts
almost a week she might participate meaningfully in the counseling
sessions and thereby start to come to grips with the issues that have
driven her to drugs and alcohol. Maybe then, her life could be saved.
Unfortunately, my non-religious daughter says she would never consent
to Sierra Tucson because it is a 12 step program. She claims she could
never respect or get benefit from any program that is based upon
religion and prayer. She says if she were to decide to enroll in a
program she would like to enroll at the Rennaisance facility in
Malibu, California. From my research it is an excellent non 12 step
program but I could never agree to pay for her participation there
because I am convinced it would be a total waste of my money since the
facility is in a large city and is within 20 miles of her residence. I
have no doubt that within about four days of enrolling there she would
call one of her nearby drug connnections and manage to get herself
extricated from the program.
So, my questions (finally) are these: Can you give me a list of some
high quality residential non 12 step drug rehab programs that are
located in remote areas? (By "high quality" I mean programs that have
MDs and psychologists on their staffs and that have good success
records.) If no such programs can be located please delete the
condition "remote" and just give me a list of programs that are not
located on Southern California. Alternatively, and particularly if
still nothing comes up, I would like to know which of the high quality
12 step programs that are remote, or if not remote are located away
from Southern California, are least strongly based upon religion and
prayer. |

Hello, kitlandis-ga!
I am listing a few facilities for you to consider. It is admittedly
hard to find residential treatment centers that do not have a focus on
12-step recovery. Please take a look at these and see if they are a
possibility.
I am also a bit confused, since the first part of your question
appears to be focused on non-religious, non 12-step programs, but then
your final sentence asks for faith-based programs. I am assuming that
last sentence is inacurate since you say your daughter would not go
for such an approach. Am I right, or are you actually looking for
faith-based, 12-step programs? If she wants nothing to do with
12-step, there are very few options. I found these after about andhour
of sifting through treatment facilities.
Let me know what you think, okay?

I have just received clarification from my daughter who has,
unfortunately, reiterated that she will not go to a 12 step program.
In view of how limited the choices are for non 12 step programs I have
lowered the payment amount to $25.00 for an answer. Thank you.

I have a family experience with a wonderful Long Term treatemnt center
that is non-faith based. Their method of treatment is behavior
modification. They don't have 12-step meetings in the center, nor do
they make it part of their program.
Long term in this case means in-patient for 9-12 months, then
out-patient for 6-12 more months. They are located in Seattle, and
take patients from all over the nation. Their success rate is 30%
--FAR ABOVE the national average for traditional treatment.

I know of one other well-regarded center with high recovery rates. The
"Harris Springs Ranch" is in a VERY remote location, about 10 miles
from the nearest town --if I remember correctly, it's in the mountains
of southern Nevada. They also use behavior modification and self
reliance, reality therapy as their method.
Sorry, I don't have more information about them, but here's a lead:

Hi again Kitlandis,
It seems to me your daughter is refusing treatment, period. The 12
step program has proved successful, and her refusal to go to such a
program sounds like an excuse.
Would you consider a program in Canada? There are also very
expensive treatments where the patient is put into a medically induced
coma, untill the detoxification has passed. If you're interested in
either Canadian centers and/or the Coma method, please let me know.
Regards, Crabcakes

Hello, kitlandis,
In response to my clarification, you stated "In view of how limited
the choices are for non 12 step programs I have lowered the payment
amount to $25.00 for an answer. Thank you."
Does this mean that you would like me to post those facilities I have
listed as a final answer? (I will see if I can find a few others, but
if not, are you satisfied with these as an answer to your question?)

Here is one more, very different treatment program. I don't see any
psychiatrists on staff, so that raises my eyebrows. But you might want
to call and talk to them. I have tried to find some "negative" reviews
of this facility, but have not run across any!

Yes, you can go ahead and post the comments as an answer and charge me
the list price. You have done as well as could be expected, given the
fact that over 99% of the rehab facilities (and possibly 100% of the
excellent rehab facilities) are 12 step programs. The fact that my
daughter is making such objections is probably an indication that she
is not really serious about conquering her addictions. Thank you for
your effort on this difficult question.

Hello, kitlandis-ga!
I do hope that your daughter will eventually be willing to seek
treatment. Unfortunately, you cannot force someone you love to see
clearly and choose the right decisions - even when you watch them
slowly destroy themselves. Add the horrific, mind-altering effects of
such an addictive substance as meth, and you have a very, very,
difficult and heartbreaking situation. As a mom, my heart truly goes
out to you. No matter what the problem or the addiction, mothers hold
a very special bond with each other concerning the love and protection
for our children, even when we do not personally know one another. My
thoughts and prayers will be with you.
Please have your daughter look over the treatment options I have
provided for you, as well as the programs provided by my colleague,
Cynthai-ga.
Oprah Winfrey recently did several shows on meth addiction. They were
"serious" eye openers. Please show your daughter this picture of the
holes left within the brain after years of meth use.

Here is another link to a recent Oprah show on addiction and rehab for
meth users. You can order the transcripts if you feel they might help.

You might want to read the following article highlighting how
extensive treatment really needs to be - not just a short residential
stint but a good program with extensive follow-up in the community.
