I am working on a paper about the Catholic Church during the French
Revolution. I am having trouble finding primary sources. I need links
to any primary sources concerning the following specific topics and
angles. Historical documents are good but personal letters and speechs
are better. I do not need all of these topics to be answered. I would
be happy to walk away with only one solid, quotable primary so I can
give a bit more of a personal view on these issues. Speed is of the
essence for this question and will be reflected in a tip.

1. Clergy who did not swear an oath the the government after the Civil
Constitution of the Clergy.
2. Clergy who experiance violence in the 1790s.
3. The Monastic Experiance during this time.
4. A Clergy member talking about why they would swear to the oath of
the Civil Constitution.
5. A Lay Catholic who worshipped with the non-jurors.

Any of these! Thanks...

Dear Anthony

There are letters and other documents in the Gallica collection at the
Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF) website which should provide
suitable material for you.

Among others, these should be worth a look:

"Lettre intéressante d'un prêtre réfractaire de Lyon, à un de ses amis
de Mâcon, en date du 19 octobre 1791 . ."
(Your category 1)
http://visualiseur.bnf.fr/Visualiseur?Destination=Gallica&O=NUMM-46466

"Adieux de M.le curé de Ste Marguerite, doyen des curés de Paris, à
ses paroissiens" 1791 (Your Category 1)
http://visualiseur.bnf.fr/Visualiseur?Destination=Gallica&O=NUMM-45509

"Adresse à l'Assemblée nationale, de la part des religieuses du
monastère de l'Assomption" 1790 (Your Category 3)
http://visualiseur.bnf.fr/Visualiseur?Destination=Gallica&O=NUMM-42735

"Recueil de lettres de divers prêtres, déportés au-delà des mers, en 1793 et 1798 "
http://visualiseur.bnf.fr/CadresFenetre?O=NUMM-46212
(This may relate to your Category 2. It says it's about what the
clergy had to suffer for their religion. The text begins on page 9,
when 40 priests are sent away with an escort of national guard and
gendarmerie. On their journey they are booed and threatened.)

"Lettre d'une dame à un prêtre non-assermenté : suivie d'une réponse à la dame"
(Your Category 1 - perhaps also relevant to Category 5)
http://visualiseur.bnf.fr/Visualiseur?Destination=Gallica&O=NUMM-45529

"A mes frères les prêtres exilés de France, réfugiés dans le diocèse
de Bruges & dans les autres diocèses des Pays-bas autrichiens" (Your
category 1)
http://visualiseur.bnf.fr/Visualiseur?Destination=Gallica&O=NUMM-46187

These links will lead to more:

Clergé réfractaire
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/catalog.php?Sujet=%22Clerge%20refractaire%22

Constitution civile du clergé
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/catalog.php?Sujet=Constitution%7CConstitutions

Déportation
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/catalog.php?Sujet=%22Deportation%22

I also searched with "Monastère Révolution", but this doesn't have a
direct link. Just start with "recherche" on the home page at:
http://gallica.bnf.fr/

I also found two other sites with letters which may interest you.

"Lettre d'un prêtre à l'évêque réfractaire de Tarbes "
(Near bottom of page - Your Category 4)
http://pedagogie.ac-toulouse.fr/histgeo/monog/picmidi/clerge.htm

This website quotes correspondence from a "curé de choc". On arrival
in his new parish, he wrote:
"Monsieur, mon cher Honnert,
"J'ai pris possession le 22 janvier 1804. Je trouvais cette paroisse
sans religion ayant été conduite par un prêtre constitutionnel . . .
qui finit par se marier dans la même paroisse avec une demoiselle fort
riche . . . . "

I hope this will be useful, but do say if you would like me to clarify
anything. Please let me know if you need help with the quirks of the
BNF site.

Best wishes - Leli

I probably should have clarified that english translations would have
been helpful but this is enough for me to run with! Thanks for speedy
answer...
