I need links where I can download or buy codecs for .avi, .dcr, .mov
, .mpg .ram, .swf, .wmv, .asf, .3gp, .asx.

so I can install them on windows 2003 sever and run a software
program. I'm currently using some free codecs and they seem to be
working, but they only work on winxp pro. I need them to work on
windows 2003 server as well.

After an extensive search, it appears that you only have one choice on
Windows 2003 Server for the RealPlayer and QuickTime formats you have
requested. It is the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It states that: "The
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack works on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003." "About
the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack" K-Lite Code Resource Site, KL Software
(2004) http://www.codecguide.com/about_mega.htm. It also includes
codecs that will cover most of the other formats as well.

I have been unable to locate any other codec packs that purport to
work on Windows 2003 that play RealPlayer and QuickTime formats. It
is a free download, available from multiple sites at
http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega.htm.

The features list is available here:
http://www.codecguide.com/features_kl.htm. It describes the numerous
codecs included, along with media players and utility programs.

The QuickTime Alternative bundled with the Mega Codec Pack or
available as a separate download indicates that "All QuickTime formats
(.mov .qt .3gp etc.) are supported...." "About QuickTime Alternative"
http://www.codecguide.com/about_qt.htm

The Real Alternative bundled with the Mega Codec Pack or available as
a separate download indicates that "All RealMedia formats (.ra .rm
.rmvb .ram .rpm .rv .rp .rt .smi .smil etc.) are supported...." It
notes the following limitation that ".smi and .smil files only play
the first part of a clip. This is only a problem when the clip
consists of multiple parts." "About Real Alternative"
http://www.codecguide.com/about_real.htm

A PC World Editor recently endorsed this codec pack: "Hassle-Free PC:
Stop Instant Messaging Interruptions" by Steve Bass, PC World (August
2005) http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,121196,00.asp

The codec pack also includes some handy tools to figure out what
codecs are needed to play a particular video file and for locating
codecs.

If you run into trouble, "Frequently Asked Questions" is at
http://www.codecguide.com/faq.htm. An online support forum is at
http://www.codecs.ipbfree.com/.

For Windows Media files (.wmv, .asf, and .asx Source: "Alphabetic File
Extension List" FILExt.com
http://filext.com/alphalist.php?extstart=%5EA), the following download
purports to install codecs for Windows 2003 Server:

"Windows Media Player Codec Installation Package 9" The Software Patch
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/mediaplayercodec.html. If you
already have Windows Media Player installed, then you may already have
these, or you may be able to obtain them through the player's update
function.

.dcr and .swf seem to be Shockwave file extensions: "Alphabetic File
Extension List" FILExt (2005)
http://filext.com/alphalist.php?extstart=%5ED and
http://filext.com/alphalist.php?extstart=%5ES. The Adobe Systems site
does not indicate the player is supported on Windows Server 2003
"System Requirements" Adobe Systems (2005)
http://www.macromedia.com/software/shockwaveplayer/productinfo/systemreqs/,
but you can get it there and try it. You might also want to contact
the company and see what they suggest if it does not work.

As an alternative approach, you may be able to hack your registry to
get your current Windows XP codecs to work. This is a risky procedure
and should only be done if you feel up to it and have a current backup
of your system since mistakes or unforeseen consequences may render it
unusable without reinstalling Windows and everything else on it. A
description of the technique with an example is available at "cinepak
win2003 std" www.moviecodec.com (February 18, 2005)
http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/5611p1.

You may find the following information useful for enabling audio on a
Windows 2003 Server: "Enabling Sound Acceleration"
http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/sound.htm

I hope one or more of these approaches work to your satisfaction.

Sincerely,

Wonko
