I have a question concerning reentry into the military.In 2000 I was
dicharged from the Air Force with a General(Under Honorable
Conditions)discharge.I served 7 months on active duty, graduating from
basic training and tech school with a flawless record. When I came home
on leave after graduation,I decided to stay home and not report to my
next duty station. The reason I made that decision was because I was
lied to about my asvab score(I was told I scored a 51 instead of the
67 which was my true score)which would have qualified me for more jobs
instead of the one I was given which I did not want at the time.I was
awol for a total of eleven days, five of which were spent in the county
jail because I was pulled over and charged with a DWI.I was flown back
to my prior duty station and stayed there about 1 month before I was
discharged. My Lt. Col. actually gave me the option of staying in or
getting out.I asked him if it were possible for me to get a different
job but he denied me.So I regrettably opted out.I was given a pretty
good discharge but my reentry code of 2b will not allow me back
in(especially the Air Force)as I understand it.The time I spent in the
military I had just turned 21 and I was naive and I made a series of
mistakes that I truly regret.I am now 26 and I am more mature and I
have a better understanding of responsibility and duty first.I have
done quite a bit of research on the subject of reentry and it doesn't
seem easy if not possible at all,but I must at least make an attempt.I
have spoken with representatives at the American War Library and they
informed me to send a letter to the secretary of the branch of service
that I want to try to join.I have also asked a recruiter and I was
told I have no chance.Maybe the recruiter was telling me the truth or
maybe he was blowing me off.Basically I just want to know is there a
chance for me to serve my country again and do it the right way this
time and if so where do I begin my quest?Thank you for your time and
efforts. P.S. in case you were wondering of the disposition of my DWI
arrest:it was dropped all the way down to a DWAI and is considered a
traffic violation on my record. Thanks again.
