There is something called a 'GICS Classification' which is essentially
an eight digit number which describes which industry a stock is in.
How can I get this information for any US stock from the web for free
-- or for less than $100 per month?

Only answers which allow me to get this information for >99% of ALL
stocks listed on the NYSE and the NASDAQ NMS which have GICS
classifications will merit the fee.

joeh777-ga,

I don't see any comprehensive source of free GICS listings, which
stands to reason, since the full list is a proprietary product.

What I have found are several fairly large lists of companies and GICS
codes that were published to the web for a number of different
reasons.

There's a GICS list of the S&P 500, another of about 1,700 technology
companies, and another with a few hundred firms, but it's not clear
for what reason they were all assembled together!

All told, though, there are lists containing a few thousand companies
and their associated GICS codes. For instance:

ABT	Abbott Labs 35202010
ADCT	ADC Telecommunications 45201020
ADBE	Adobe Systems 45103020
AMD	Advanced Micro Devices 45205020
AES	AES Corp. 55101010
AET	Aetna Inc. (New) 35102030
AFL	AFLAC Inc. 40301020
A	Agilent Technologies 45203010
APD	Air Products & Chemicals 15101040
ACV	Alberto-Culver 30302010
ABS	Albertson's 30101030
AL	Alcan Inc. 15104010
AA	Alcoa Inc. 15104010
.
.
.
WEN Wendy's International 25301040

and so on.

Would these lists be of interest to you as an answer to your question?

I'm looking for periodically (daily) updated data. This information
changes over time, and I'm not looking for some particular snapshot in
time for a subset of US stocks. I need continually updated
information.
