Hi,

We have 4 XP pro pc's in our network, in my laptop(XP pro) i have
shared some installers and other files. But, first when i viewed it
from other xp pro pc's some folder had installers, some didn't. When i
check the properties it should zero bytes, but when i open i will fine
one installer file and two missing. It is really confusing.

Later, i went to my shared documents, all the files were there, then i
clicked the neighbourhood in my own laptop, and click on my laptop and
went into my shared resources, the problem is there i can't view it
even from my own laptop where the resources were shared,so locally i
can view, but over the network places option i can't view. Then finally
i tried from windows 98 pc's in my network it works fine, i can view
all resources and all is well, so i need to know what is the solution
for this.

Last info, today though one of the XP pro users tried to open a
attachment which was a junk mail with subject: "Your IP has been
logged visiting illegal websites", so in doubt she opened, then
nothing happened, in panic she disconnected from the network and ran
an antivirus scan (CA Antivirus 7.2ver) and nothing was found, so i
really dont understand this,please help.

Regards,
Arun.

Windows Firewall prevents you from accessing the folders.
Disable the Firewall.
Start->Settings->Control panel
And click on Windows Firewall Icon and turn off.

If you Dont want to turn off windows firewall then there is another way,
Then open windows firewall as described above and go to Exceptions tab.
Make sure File and Printer Sharing is clicked on.
Thats all now you can see other files and folders from any where in
the network as long as you are using XP Pro in all machines.

You should check permissions on your files (right-click on file or
folder, Properties, Security) and you should check Share permissions
too (right-click on shared folder, Properties, Sharing, Permissions
button). Try to add Everyone with read and change rights to Share
permissions and enable Guest account. If it will work, so it's a
permission problem.

The fact that you can browse and see the resources on a W98 box but
not the XP boxes points towards this being an issue with the default
setting in Windows XP that turns NETBIOS off to cut down on broadcast
traffc. Net Neighborhood visibility relies on NetBIOS broadcast (or
DNS)and Win98 uses this as default. On XP Box - Right Click My Network
places, click properties, right click local area connection of active
network card, click properties, select TCP/IP Internet protocol and
click properties button to the right, select advanced tab at bottom,
select WINS tab at top, check box that says enable NETBIOS over
TCP-IP. Then either run NBTstat -RR from command line (look up online
if unsure of this procedure) or run reboot. Shared resources should
now be visible in network Places. This is especially true if there is
no server on your network providing DNS info to the network PC's.
Perform on all PC's running XP. this should be done after verifying
that Windows Firewall is turned off as Sarulan poster suggests. File
and folder permissions will block access but should not impact
visibility in Network Places. Happy Browsing.

tell me, are all your machines in the same "workgroup". If not, ensure
that they are all in the group called "MSHOME" or "Workgroup".

If they are not, you will find, windows xp and windows 98 will not
communicate, also ensure your shared recources are named with LESS
than 12 charactors.

If you have any more probs. E-mail me.-
