"mlot" is a big hammer, "mlotek" is a regular hammer, "mlotkowski" would be "hammerSKI" -ski is a polish regional ending for lots of last names: it does not have any meaning, "grammatically suggestive",makes a word more of an adjective that noun how do I became certified Answerer? |

There is a meaning to ending on "ski". It designates a male. For a female the ending would be "ska" (Mlotkowska). For more info see http://www.polishroots.org/surnames/surnames_endings.htm |

it is a grammar thing, not meaning in the semantic sense of it: but you are right, it is "male ending" for the name: although you would meet polish women using male -ski ending with their surnames |
