Larsen-ga,

St. Joseph’s Paper & Packaging,INC is located in South Bend, Indiana.
Their website was last updated on May 14, 2002, so I feel sure it is
still in operation! No where on the site does it list the founder’s
name, but the name listed for contact is a Mr. John Miller , whose
e-mail address is : john@stjoepaper.com

http://www.stjoepaper.com/

http://www.elkhart.org/bizdirectory/cat00381.htm

An Indiana business directory lists St. Joseph’s Paper & Packaging as
well, but with a different South Bend address.

SAINT JOSEPH PAPER & PKGNG INC
1408 ELWOOD AVE #-213
SOUTH BEND, IN 46628-2757
219-287-9817
http://www.michianalife.com/webpgs/01white/s10.htm

The above website was last updated 3/31/200, so it’s possible the
company moved, or one address is the plant and the other is an office
address.

Please ask for a clarification if this is not the company information
you have requested.

The Company is now called St. Joe and owns almost 1 million
acres...mostly in the panhandle of Florida...which it is developing.
My question is what happened to the paper side of the business....when
it was called St. Joseph Paper Company...and who started the company
that had the vision of buying up all the property?

larsen,
Thanks for clarifying your question. St. Joes Paper is definitely a
different company than St. Joseph Paper.

It appears that Florida Coast Paper, the company that bought St. Joes
Paper, has also gone out of business.
http://www.dc.state.fl.us/pub/compass/9908/page03.html

Apparently, St. Joe’s Paper Company was bought by Florida Coast Paper
Company, L.L.C. in 1996. Read more in this EPA document here:

“Construction of the St. Joe Paper Co. mill in the 1930's began Port
St. Joe's industrial era, but the closing of the mill in the late
1990's ushered in the revival of the city's reputation as a favorite
vacation destination.” From the visitgulf website.

“Southwood is a trend-setting development in a number of ways, not the
least of which is that it becomes the first of several such planned
developments by St. Joe, the land-holding giant that has evolved from
the old Dupont estate's St. Joe Paper Company. With former Disney
Development CEO Peter Rummell at the helm, St. Joe has quickly
acquired class-act developer Arvida to serve as its development arm,
and Prudential Florida Realty, the nation's fifth-largest commercial
real estate company, as its marketing talent.” From Florida
Sustainable Communities Center website:

“…Mehiel's Four M Co. formed a joint venture with another company to
purchase the paper mill in 1996, Reeves maintained, and, within two
years, the mill closed, putting 950 employees in the city of 3,600 out
of work.” From The Buffalo News Online:

Dear Larson:

If my recollection serves me, there was a St. Joseph Paper Company (in
Missouri??) which was a primary manufacturer of (paperboard??). I
believe it was merged with Stone Container at one time then
Stone-Smurfit then Jefferson Smurfit. I have an old copy of Walden's
ABC Paper Guide at home but I won't be there until late Monday,
September 2nd....I'll look at that time to see if I can add to
crabcakes answer....

Hello Larson:

Looking though and old Walden's ABC Guide, I see the following
companies:

St. Joe Container Company (sub of St. Joe Paper Company)
1650 Prudential Drive
Jacksonville, FL

Factories in the following:
Birmingham, AL
Dothan, AL
Lake Wales, FL
College Park, GA
Northlake, IL
Hartford City, IN
Louisville, KY
Baltimore, MD
Charlotte, NC
Sharpsburg, PA
Laurens, SC
Memphis, TN
Houston, TX
Mesquite, TX
Chesapeake, VA

Also HQ at the same Jacksonville, FL address was:

St. Joe Forest Products Company (pulp)
mill at: Port St. Joe, FL

and

St. Joe Paper Company (which appeared to be the parent company)
Chairman of the Board: Winfred L. Thronton
President: Robert Nedley

also there was a St. Joseph Packaging Company founded in 1915 in St.
Joseph, MO (not related to St. Joe Paper Company)
(mainly a convertor of set up and folding cartons)

I do believe the St. Joe Paper/Pulp/Container companies are now part
of Jeffereson Smurfit. If you want us to check this for you, we'll be
happy to do so. It appears you were most interested in the land
acquisitions of this company which now have evolved into a development
company. Many paper companies had extensive forest holdings which are
now open to development.

Thank you for bringing up this interesting part of industrial history.
