Dear cita82-ga;
Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.
On the night of May 10, 1941 the British House of Commons was bombed
by the Germans and the Chamber and Members? Lobby was totally gutted
by the attack and the subsequent fire that ensued.
?At Westminster, through everything, the Mother of Parliaments
remained, a prime target, easily distinguishable, beside the river.
The House of Commons Chamber was destroyed: a bomb fell the same night
(10 May 1941) through the roof of the Lords, not far from their
Chamber. The Palace of Westminster and precincts were hit by ten high
explosive bombs, one oil bomb, and many hundreds of incendiaries. St.
Thomas's Hospital, across the river, was hit many rimes. Almost every
building in sight beside the river was wounded.?

Of the bombing Winston Churchill said:
?On the night of May 10, 1941, with one of the last bombs of the last
serious raid, our House of Commons was destroyed by the violence of
the enemy, and we have now to consider whether we should build it up
again, and how, and when. We shape our buildings, and afterwards our
buildings shape us. Having dwelt and served for more than forty years
in the late Chamber, and having derived very great pleasure and
advantage therefrom, I, naturally, should like to see it restored in
all essentials to its old form, convenience and dignity.?
