I recently purchased a tattoo kit for someone who has great artistic
talent. I know there is a lot of criticism of "scratchers" and self
taught tattoo artist and many will follow the party line of find an
"apprenticeship". However, I am looking for a good web site or book
that will walk a person thru the very basics and use of equipment and
how to get get started.

Many states have licensing requirements. Unless your friend wants to
learn jailhouse tattooing, be sure he or she complies with the legal
requirements that apply in his or her area. You might also want to
consider the dire legal consequences (both civil and criminal) that
your friend may incur if he or she maims someone with a poorly-done
amateur tattoo.

I would suggest practicing with the needle on vegetables before going
anywhere near human skin.
