Dear nanomeese-ga;

Sure I can!

Patricia Polacco, is a well-known author, illustrator and storyteller
of primarily children and youth books. She was born in Lansing,
Michigan and grew up in Oakland, California where she lives to this
day only a few blocks from her childhood home. Polacco?s family, on
her father?s side, was Irish and her mother?s family was Russian Jews.
Many of her stories are derived from both of these lineages and she
presumably incorporates some facts about her heritage with fiction as
the basis of her stories.

As a youngster Polacco suffered from dyslexia, which caused her to
have some reading difficulties but would not identify her disability
until she was about fourteen year old, and only then when it was
discovered by her teacher who in turn got her the help she so badly
needed. To make up for her shortcomings and the teasing she received
she quickly learned to adapt and taught herself to draw in an effort
to gain some respect from her peers and indeed she eventually did
become a regarded illustrator at the age of 41. She attended Ohio
State University where she met Charlotte Huck, a distinguished teacher
and author in her own right of children's literature textbooks. In
later years Huck provided the inspiration for the character, Aunt
Chip, in Polacco?s, ?Aunt Chip and the Great Triple Creek Dam Affair?.

In spite of her dyslexia Polacco earned a Master's degree in Fine Arts
and a Ph. D. in Art History from Universities at Ohio State University
and in Australia, specializing in Russian and Greek painting, and
iconographic history. She has received critical acclaim for her book
?Pink and Say?, a story based on an actual incident in which a brave
young black Union solider saves the life of a fellow soldier, and
which won an American Library Association Notable Children's Books
status in 1995. Ms. Polacco credits her fact-based book, ?Meteor?,
with opening the door to her writing career. She said, "My book Meteor
is a fact based story that started it all! ...As I was growing up it
looked like a big old rock in the yard...but Grampa told me what it
really was and told me the legend."

Today she is the mother of two grown children, son and a daughter, and
she splits her time between her homes in Oakland, California and Union
City, Michigan where she still has family and friends. She also
travels to schools and libraries, sharing her fascinating stories with
children all over the country. She is a museum consultant on the
restoration of icons and as a participant in many citizen exchange
programs for writers and illustrators, Patricia Polacco has traveled
extensively in Russia as well as other former Soviet republics. She
continues to support programs that encourage Russo-American
friendships and understanding and she is also deeply involved in
inner-city projects in the United States that promote the peace and
encourage art and literacy programs.

Ms. Polacco?s son built her website for her because she does not use a
computer, so contacting her via email is out of the question. If you?d
like to write her though here is her mailing address taken directly
