You need to try to find out what your problem is. Some folks take up a
light exercise program, such as walking or running, that works for
them. Some men and women lift heavy weights and lose weight. Others
simply eat more vegetables and fruit and less fat stuff.
For a diet to make a permanent change, it needs to be a diet which
does not involve major sacrifices FOR YOU, or any major deprivation.
Thus, a lot of success if psychologically based.
The woman who took care of my son as a child is retired now, she
discovered her daughter and granddaughter were allergic to wheat. With
no other change but eliminating wheat, she lost 35 pounds and went
from a size 18 to a size 8. When she cooks, she uses rice flour.
In my case, I was nearly 220 pounds, and was always extremely fatigued
after eating meals. An uncle in Mexico lost over 40 pounds on a
vegetable based diet. So, when I came back to the States, I started a
vegetable diet. The first day I did not need a long nap, or two or
three.
My daughter gave me a book on the Atkins Diet. Dr Atkins New Diet
Revolution. He explains in there why his diet works. I have long
known I was hypoglycemic, my first time to pass out after eating candy
was back in the Fifties. So, I knew from his details that the diet was
for me.
It is not an easy diet. ONe must take 4 Calcium 600D a day; 4 Vitamin
C, not chewable, per day; 4 (four) multivitamins a day; and around 20
psyllium pills for fiber. If you cannot do this, DO NOT TRY THE ATKINS
DIET, YOU CAN HURT YOURSELF IF YOU DO REPLACE THE MISSING NUTRITION.
(Eskimos traditionally live on such a diet.)
An average person can consume quite a few carbs and still lose weight
fast on the Atkins diet. As a hypoglycemic, I am at nearly 0 carbs,
and am still losing less than a pound a week since last March.
I am quite content on this diet. I don't mind a monotonous diet. (Note
that people who are not hypoglycemic would lose their weight very
fast.) I eat lots of fat and lots of protein. My typical breakfast is
4 fried eggs, and half a pound od pork sausage. Yummy! I eat lots of
chicken; beef; cheese; and pork rinds.
I am down to around 178, and feel very strong.
I have encountered a lot of hostility from folks, who have NEVER READ
THE BOOK NOR TRIED THE DIET, and this includes medical doctors who
have written in books things that just don't correlate with reality.
This diet will not work for a lot of people, because they just don't
have the willpower to walk away from their favorite foods, or can't
stand to take so many pills every day. I would walk through hot coals,
speaking only figuratively, to look and feel like I do now. I FEEL
GREAT!!!
Last week I was in Ohio when it snowed. I shoveled snow for a total of
three hours, and did not feel tired. Oh, did I say I am 63? My blood
pressure has dropped from 130/70 to 106 over 70.
In Mexico, in the past, I was able to swing a pick-axe on my wife's
land no more than 20 minutes without going in the house and taking a
long nap. In November, I worked up to three hours, and when I decided
it was enough, happily walked a mile down town on an errand for my
wife.
DO NOT START ANY DIET WITHOUT MEDICAL SUPERVISION, UNLESS YOU
PERSONALLY CHECK IT OUT AND ARE COMPLETELY SATISFIFED THAT DIET IS FOR
YOU!!! What works for another may not work for you. For heaven's sake,
don't try the Atkins diet without reading the book and seeing if it is
really suited for you. On the other hand, if it does suit you, don't
let anyone who knows nothing about the diet talk you out of it.
I think in the last year or so, Consumer's Reports and Readers Digest
had feature articles on diets and their success rates. They should be
available at local libraries. Good information will state that
different folks need different diets, for both physical and
psychological reasons.
If you have absolutely no will power at all, then probably no diet
will work for you, sorry. In my case, I joke my name is William Power
but I go by my nickname. (Will.) All I needed to know was a diet that
would work for me, and I took care of the rest.
A side note. My diet has acted as an aphrodisiac -- for my wife!!! I
don't look like a hog any more. She does tell me I am getting vain,
and I tell her I really don't mind looking at myself in the mirror any
more. |
