Earlier this year I found (and used) a great website where people
posted things they no longer wanted, and others claimed them. You
could also post 'wanted' ads. There was an article in the UK press,
which led me to them. Unfortunately I have lost the name of it - and
although I have tried searching, you can imagine that the words "free"
"second hand" "exchange" etc are a little unprecise... Can you help me
find it again? I have quantities of things looking for a good new
home.

Hello Elephantschild,

I believe the website you recall is Freecycle.
http://www.freecycle.org/

Here is a description.

"The Freecycle Network? is made up of many individual groups across
the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (&
getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is run by
a local volunteer moderator (them's good people). Membership is free."

How does it work?

"When you want to find a new home for something -- whether it's a
chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door -- you simply send an
e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group."

"Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself. Simply
respond to a member's offer, and you just might get it. After that,
it's up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a
pickup time for passing on the treasure."

"One main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate
for all ages."

That was perfect! I never thought of literally asking Google to help
find me a website like this: but it makes sense!

You might also check out http://www.craigslist.org/ This site has
lots of information for things going on in various communities. It
also has a section where people can post things that are for
sale/trade or that they are giving away free.
