The recording industry dumps much of its surplus stock in Asia, especially China in the form of cut out CDs. Unfortunately, ?Most music-label executives won't talk about it on the record, and no one is monitoring the traffic. (BMG in New York would not comment for this article; EMI in London and Universal in Los Angeles declined repeated interview requests.)? ? Time Asia. I want to find out how they end up in China, who in the west is making them available, what benefits they get from doing this (extra profits, tax write offs etc), and how this affects the legal status of the actual CDs and DVDs Here are a few links that introduce the subject of Cut out CDs, known as Dakou in Chinese http://www.time.com/time/asia/magazine/printout/0,13675,501030127-409647,00.html http://www.moremusic.co.uk/links/features/cut-out.htm http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5226945/ http://www.theshiftedlibrarian.com/2004/08/20.html http://www.theworld.org/globalhits/2005/09/30.shtml http://www.iias.nl/iiasn/26/theme/26T2.html http://www.punkinternational.com/v2/content.php?article.241 |
