My daughter is going to Kenya for three months. I think she might take
with an old laptop so as to be used first and then sold out. The
laptop seems to be some six years old, 24M, 1,2G, TFT 12in (some flaw
lines), CD, PC-card. Can I expect that there is someone who would pay
s.th. $300 for it so that she doesn't need to carry it back to
Finland?

Hello, Timle,

I must admit I have not entered Kenya before, but I have travelled to
several other countries in the area. They check incoming luggage
quite thoroughly, and your daughter might find a record made of the
import of the laptop - to make sure that she has it when she leaves.
If she leaves without the laptop there might well be customs duty or
other taxes to pay. However, this might not be the case, and if there
is no record of it going in there won't be a problem about it not
going out.

I would be surprised if you could find someone to pay as much as $300
for the laptop. Although new laptops probably cost far, far more in
Kenya than they do in the States, or even in Finland, someone in need
could well find a friend travelling abroad or returning to Kenya who
could buy a new machine (or a good reconditioned second-hand machine)
for not much more. Even with customs duties it would be a better
bargain.

Having said that, I wonder how much your daughter paid in Finland for
the machine?

Good luck, read2live

i must start by saying i dont know much about kenya, but from the
sound of the condition of the laptop it probably is not worth $300. I
would guess that if it were sold on ebay, it might get around $200,
simply because any working laptop no matter how obsolete seems to be
worth at least $150. If you were to sell it on ebay, its possible you
could get $300, but just trying to sell it while you are on vacation
to whomever might purchase it, I would not expect to get so much. I
have used a laptop with similar specs to the one you have mentioned,
as well as a laptop with better specs that I own now. My newer used
laptop cost $700 6 months ago and is leagues ahead in speed and
quality.

Thank you read2live and funkywizard for your help. There was some
Kenyan boys visiting Finland and they told that a used laptop might be
even worth $1000 in Kenya.

I must close this question, because my daughter is leaving right now
(with the laptop)
