I have an HP Media Center m1270n computer, and a cable modem. My
computer has the capability of Caller ID, and would like to know what
I need to do to get that to work. I need to know everything, from
hardware needed, how to hook it up and programs I need to download.
I've looked at many different sites, and dowloaded programs, and just
cannot get it to work. An EASY (ie beginner language) step by step
process would be appreciated! |

Hi 187345,
I'm not 100% sure what it is you are trying to do. Do you have in mind
a pop-up message that will appear on you computer screen when you have
a phone call?
Have you subcribed to Call ID with your phone company?

Yes, that's EXACTLY what happens Hummer....I have my computer hooked
up to my tv via an S-video cable, so whatever is displayed on my
computer screen is on my tv. So i can be watching tv, and it will pop
up showing who is phoning.....media center can do some neat things!
And yes i do have the Caller ID service. Hope this helps! Thanks for
replying!

Hi again. What make and model is your modem? Do you know if it is
TAPI-compliant? (I'm assuming you've never had the Caller ID working)

The make and model of my modem is "Superlink 2810" and is a CABLE
modem (I don't know if that will make a difference or not).....as for
if it's TAPI-compliant, I'm not too sure. My brother ran tests that he
found on the net before that said my modem should support the Caller
ID, but he gave up trying to set it up after that, becasue he couldn't
figure it out either

187345, chances are the problem is with your modem, but you really
need to know for sure. There are directions for testing it at the
following link.
Caller ID Problems
"If the program logs all calls as "No Caller ID", then the Caller ID
feature on your modem is not working. For the Caller ID to work
properly, your modem must have Caller ID capability, it must be
compatible with the Caller ID service in your area, and you must
subscribe to Caller ID service with your phone company. Also, your
modem must be installed with a TAPI compliant .inf file (driver). If
not, your modem's Caller ID feature simply will not be enabled. This
is the most common cause of Caller ID problems."
[snip instructions]
"If this works, then you know your modem supports Caller ID and is
working properly. If so, you probably have a driver problem.
If this test fails, then you may have a modem problem, your modem may
not have Caller ID capability, or it may not be compatible with your
local Caller ID standard."

Modem Reviews
"This page is provided as a service to those users looking to purchase
a new modem. It can be difficult to find a modem with Caller ID,
voice, and speakerphone features that work well with TAPI programs
such as CallStation. And with all the modems available with different
chipsets and price levels it's hard to know what to buy. Here is some
general information we hope you will find useful."

Ok I ran the test again, and my modem is compatible! It showed the
number of the person calling and the name and the time! So I know it's
not the modem....
Thanks for your help so far hummer! Don't give up now! I appreciate it....

Good morning, 187345, thanks for the good news! Hmmm, if it were me,
I think I would try another program to see if I could get Caller ID
working. If so, then it would be a matter of deciding whether to
continue using it (or some other program) or to try to figure out what
to do with MC.
