What cell phones AND PDAs can be used with my Mac PowerBook4 as
wireless modem. I want to be able to use it to make "dial-up" internet
connections on my Mac 12" PowerBook. I just bought a Blackberry 8700c
and discover it will not do this. Help! Would the palmOne Treo 650 or
HP iPAQ hw6515 work? |

Please can you clarify what you mean by "to make dial-up internet connections".
Does this mean you wish to use an existing dial-up connection you use
with a regular dial-up modem (e.g. AOL dial-up) or do you mean you
simply wish to be able to access the internet from your Mac using the
PDAs phone network?

Hi - Sorry I wasn't more clear.
Really either is fine, as long as I can get my G4 PowerBook online via
the PDA. I guess I'd opt for the PDA's Phone Network.
I want to use my G4's web browser and e-mail --- on the internet, via the PDA.
Is there ant Blackberry way of doing this (I have a 8700C) -- official
or unofficial.
If not, would either of the other two PDA I mentioned, work?

Hi Jeff,
The link provided in the comments section by decoct-ga details an
unsupported method for using the Blackberry as a dial-up modem.
http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?s=39c5f14443a9b0d96ae0b779194aeffd&t=2019&highlight=gprs%20dial
It appears that the PalmOne Treo 650 will work as a wireless dial-up
modem and is supported by the manufacturer. The following Palm support
page (in PDF format) describes how to set-up the PDA as a wireless
dial-up modem:
http://www.palm.com/us/support/handbooks/treo/Treo650_GSM_DUN_UG.pdf
The page details how to set-up a dial-up internet connection in
Windows XP ? you simply need to follow the equivalent steps for your
Powerbook operating system.
Please note that you must have a data services plan with your wireless
service provider to use the PalmOne Treo 650 as a wireless dial-up
modem.
I do not know which wireless service provider you will be using with
your PDA but the following page provides step-by-step instructions for
dial-up networking using Sprint (which now officially supports dial-up
networking) and the following technology combination ? Bluetooth,
PalmOne Treo 650 and Mac OS X
http://vocaro.com/trevor/treo-dun/
It also appears that the HP iPAQ hw6515 will also function as a
dial-up modem. However, the HP iPAQ series seems to be geared to
Windows PCs and requires third-party software to connect and
synchronize with Macs. Therefore, I would eliminate this PDA from your
options.

We need to get back on track with my question:
1.) We are in a MAC environment -- I use a Mac Powerbook G4 12" --
please do NOT respond with any answers concerning Windows.
2.) I pretty much have determined that the Blackberry 8700C will NOT
work with my Mac as a wireless modem.
3.) So .... I need to know if a TREO 650 -- will work? I called Palm
and they said NO! But ... I think there are some third part solutions.
4.) BASICALLY .... I need a wireless modem solution for my Mac when
I'm on the road and can't get on a WiFi.
5.) If the PDAs are no go .... is there a phone that will work?? What
about Sony Erickosn?? But ... remember ... I'm on a Mac.
6.) I'm with Cigular anw would prefer to stay with them .... but if
moving would work, I will.
7.) Also note that my Powerbook G4 is a small 12" ---- which means
those modem PMA cards that Verizon has are not a option as the small
12" PowerBooks do not have a slot.
Thanks

Hi Jeff,
Apologies for the delay, but I was away from my PC for a few hours.
According to the following Palm support page, the Treo 650 will work
as a dial-up modem on the Cingular network:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(34830)
The dial-up network feature was originally disabled when the Treo 650
was first released for Cingular but now appears to be enabled with the
latest official software update -
http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/treo650updater/cingular.html
The following pages describe setting up a Treo 650 for dial-up
networking on the Cingular network, so it can be done.
http://mytreo.net/archives/2005/08/bluetooth_dialup_networking_dun_for_the_treo_650.php
http://www.captnswing.net/howto/treodun/
http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.id=palm&message.id=3120
I hope the information provided is useful. Please let me know if the
above does not meet your requirements.

I just noticed that the first link does not work as the last character
has not been included as part of the link. Please paste and copy the
entire link into your address bar to view the correct page.
