I am developing a wiki site and want to motivate people to add and
update data. The format and content of the data are highly constrained
so there won't be creative motivation (the data entries are something
like, say, tree species with latin name, tree count, and likely
diseases).

What are motivators to add and update? Am looking along the lines of:
- status: rank contributors by quantity added
- challenge: ask for specific data
- competition: create a contest with a time limit
- payment: nominal fee
- exclusivity: limit add/update group (like the 500 google answerers)

I would like
1) what would *theoretically* work
2) what's *actually* working at user content-created sites

"wiki" isn't the correct term for this site. The site would sell its
data contents, and count on site visitors for data contribution. What
I'd like are ways (in addition to cash) to motivate contribution.
