Question ID: 606111
I'm looking for the best price/value on for a cellphone and plan for
my wife and myself.
I?ve looked at all the websites for the major carriers and am feeling
a little overwhelmed and without the time to devote to figuring it all
out.

Currently I have a Treo 600 with Sprint in zip code 11201 and am
coming to the end of a 2 year contract. My wife has a small cheap
Samsung phone on the same plan. I use the phone for voice less than
100 minutes a month and my wife uses hers less than 10 minutes per
month. I use email and internet on the Treo all the time and have
unlimited usage. I have phone insurance through Sprint for $5/month
which I have used twice. Our average monthly phone bill from Sprint is
$110.

I am hoping to upgrade to a Treo 650 and am looking for the best deal
that will have:

- a Treo 650 with unlimited data service. I need very low voice minutes.
- A second small functional phone for my wife with little or no minutes.
- Some kind of replacement/damage insurance for the Treo 650.

Other considerations:

- We drive in rural areas so more coverage is better. Sprint has been
OK, but not great.
- While I like the Treo I would consider other handsets that would
synchronize with Macintosh Now Contact and Now Up To Date and run
Vindigo.
- It might be better for one or both of the phones to be prepaid since
we use so little voice. Don?t know whether you can get prepaid
unlimited data.
- it would be useful if the Treo were GSM so I could use it overseas .
Two ways to do this are with an unlocked phone and local SIM cards or
with a locked phone and reasonable rates overseas.
- It seems that it is possible to unlock phones using third parties,
if this is reliable, that might be an option.

I would like to see a few options:
- lowest cost of extending our current plan with Sprint with the same
equipment (Treo 600 and cheap Samsung)
- lowest cost (figuring initial phone cost plus 2 year plan) for a new
Treo 650 and small simple phone, either with a shared plan or two
separate plans or carriers.
- additional costs for an unlocked GSM Treo 650, or unlocking a locked
GSM Treo 650.

Please contact me if you require any additional information.

My cell phone plan expires on December 26th, so I need this info before then.

You seem like an honest sort so I?m going to share this wildly popular
new resource with you in hopes of providing you with a solution, and
you can tell me if it works for you as an answer.

There is a new service called CELLTRADE in which you will find dozens
of people who, for whatever reason (relocation, financial problems,
etc.) are currently trying to find someone like you to assume the
remainder of their phone accounts. The service was just featured on a
segment of NBC?s Today Show just this morning in fact and they
indicated that it?s a first-come/first-served type deal so you have to
act fast when an opportunity arises.

CELLTRADE USA
http://www.celltradeusa.com/

You can search (see search form on right side of the page) for people
who have a service similar to the one you are hoping to find.
Fortunately, for you, happen to be several at the moment. One in
particular appears to have EXACTLY what you are looking for:

Two Treo 650 phones in ?like new? condition. Both phones and all
accessories are included Sprint PCS Fair & Flexible Plan provides
discounted minutes above the first 800 anytime minutes included for
both lines ($70). Nationwide Long Distance Included Unlimited Night &
Weekend minutes Beginning at 7 pm are included in this contract. There
are 13 months left on this contract, which can be assumed immediately
(unless someone else grabs it first, of course). You can have the
numbers changed to your own cell numbers or you can assume the
customer?s phones numbers for free. If you assume the contract for the
remainder of the agreement and like it you can renew it when the
agreement ends and keep using it just as the former customer would
have been entitled to do had he kept it himself. Otherwise it merely
ends and that, as they say, is that.

Please let me know if this works for you as an answer and I will gladly respond.

Have you had a chance to review my source yet? I was pretty certain it
would be the type of plan you are looking for and was hoping for some
feedback from you.

It's hard to believe but the 650 Treo plan I mentioned above is still
available this morning. In addition there now appear to be NINE OTHERS
added to the database. Time is of the essence is you are interested in
these.

Thanks for the info. Sorry I've been unresponsive, I'm in
low-bandwidth mode right now, but will look at the link you suggest
this evening and get back to you. Sounds promising and may well
qualify as an answer.

I've looked into the Celltrade site and though it does look promising,
I haven't had any response to questions posted to 3 of the listings.
I see in their literature that they allow the people desiring to get
rid of a contract to post a listing to "gauge interest" before they
actually sign up for the service. I also notice that some of the
deals seem to good to be true so I am a little suspicious of the whole
thing. I will keep you posted.

Thanks.

Please let me know if it results in your acquisition of a suitable
phone and contract. Bear in mind that some of the plans that seem too
good to be true are acts of depseration on some customers' part to do
what they can to get of of plans they cannot afford (as I mentioned,
for whatever reason). Remebre too that you are hnot merely assuming a
plan from a customer you are assuming the contract from the provider
as well. Having said that ALL of the plans can be independently
verified by you through each provider.

I'm fairly conviced you will eventually find what you need using this
source. Again, you seemed linke an honest sort so I offered you the
infromation up front so you could find a rapid solution to your
problem. Please let me know if it works as an answer under the
circumstances.

I will certainly keep you posted. Still no response from any of my
three querys to Celltrade, so difficult to judge whether this will
work out. Do you have any interest in doing the research on my
question? Again, I have little time to devote to this and am looking
for an executable solution with real numbers.

Actually I'm probably not the savvy shopper who would do the best work
in this area in terms of comparing plans and prices. I simply posted
this particular link because I knew about it and it DID have several
Treo plans and phones that you specified. I'm leaving the question
open to anyone who might want to shop for you in the event that this
CellTrade source doesn't pan out for you.
