Question ID: 606274
My question: I was diagnosed with a hypo thyroid & would like to know
about the possiblility of weight loss. At age 12 I was 200lbs, at age
23 now I am 320lbs. It was suggested to test for a thyroid issue
(because I was always cold, my sister was a size 4 while I was a size
24, etc.) The results came back with a TSH level of 8 with normal T3
and T4. Will medication for my thyroid make it much easier to lose
weight? My husband is very excited about seeing me slim down, but
would like to know what the medication can do for me.

Yes, I am seeing my doctor this Monday. I am not looking for medical
advice as in what I should do - but what is possible/most likely to
occur. Just for clarification. :-)

According to WebMD, its not recommended that you use hypothyroid
medication for weight loss. However, I believe it makes weight loss
much easier. Many of the hypothyroid drugs on WebMD list weight loss
as a side effect.

Remember that we cannot give you medical advice (see disclaimer
below). However, hypothyroidism is associated with gaining weight,
and treatment of hypothyroidism with Levothyroxine (T4) will likely
help you lose weight. BUT, this can only be prescribed by your
doctor, and the normal T3 and T4 may make it unnecessary for you. Also
remember that any drug can have side effects -- excess T4 can cause
heart palpitations, tremor, diarrhea, etc.

Summary: yes, treating hypothyroidism can help you lose weight, but
you should see a doctor to determine if treatment is right for you.
