Dear jackatolah-ga
Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.
The answer is yes. There may have been other instances that I am not
aware of but I did find one reference to incident on September 16,
1952 in which Captain Troy "Gordie" Cope, 28, of Norfolk, Arkansas,
was piloting what was then considered the Air Force's top fighter jet,
the F-86 Sabre over the Yalu River, an area known as ?MiG Alley? which
separates North Korea from China, when he encountered a squadron of
Russian MiG-15 fighters, believed to have been flown by Russians in
defense of North Korea. Following a ferocious aerial dogfight with the
MiGs Captain Cope was shot down.
Copes body was missing for 52 years but in In May 2004, the Joint
POW/MIA Accounting Command sent a team of specialists to Dandong China
to excavate the site where Cope?s jet was believed to have gone down.
Following a month long search of the crash site the team recovered
human remains and parts of a military aircraft. In February 2005 the
remains were positively identified as that of Troy Cope and were
interred at a military cemetery in Plano, Texas on May 31 of this
year.
