Most advisors will not let their students defend unless the advisor thinks the student is ready. In the unusual cases where a student "fails" the student can usually try again after a while. While I have not seen any statistics, and I'm sure it varies in different fields and universities, I think that most PHD "failures" are due to leaving the program (for whatever reason) rather than to failing the oral defense. |
