I'm certainly no expert in this area, and I doubt that any
GA Researcher is, however, I've been able to determine that
PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and LDA (Linear Discriminant
Analysis), are two areas used in software development for this
task, and I believe your interests would be satisfied by
going through the results of a Google search on these topics,
which are frequently illustrated in a way that can't be
reproduced in the GA forum:

PCA OR "Principal Component Analysis" LDA OR "Linear Discriminant Analysis"

If you think otherwise, please let me know what would make
for a more satisfying answer.

It'd be really helpful to me if you could look through the results and
let me know which links to direct my attention to, in particular,
based on relevance and/or citation. Thank you.

I would have gone through the links for you, but, alas,
I know so little about this topic that I would have a
hard time selecting the most informative and useful ones,
though Google's Page Rank Algorithm tends to list the
most likely useful ones at the top.

Sorry I can't be of more help with this.

I assume you've already looked at wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facial_recognition_system and gone
through some of their links...

and HowStuffWorks http://computer.howstuffworks.com/facial-recognition.htm
for your background....

And you're looking for a detailed technical writeup to start your
study. Brush up on your statistics and look at a paper from the ACM:
W. Zhao, R. Chellappa, A. Rosenfeld, P.J. Phillips, Face Recognition:
A Literature Survey, ACM Computing Surveys, 2003, pp. 399-458. This
paper talks about what is out there...
http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=954342

Another great resource is http://www.face-rec.org/ They include some
specific algorithims and some code samples, on the algorithims
section.

When writing and testing your own code to do regognition, there are
the Face Recognition Vendor Tests (FRVT) to test how well you do.
They're tough! See http://www.frvt.org/ for all about it...

good luck on your studies!

Face detection (face finding as opposed to face recognition) is built
into the open, free Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV).
OpenCV also has various techniques such as a matrix library where you
can do eigenfaces etc for recognition. A full machine learing library
will show up there I believe in March that will have many techniques
for recognition of faces.

See OpenCV at:
