Retail services companies

Aside from Sysco which delivers food to restaurants, who else supplies
retailers with services (i.e. outsourcing)?

Your answer should look like:
What are some examples of retailer service companies?
What services do they provide?

Hello JimWalden,

Below you will find the results of my research for companies that supply retailers.

Security Source

This company provides personnel and products for the loss-prevention
needs of industrial and retail stores

Example: Sunglass Hut

?With a geographically dispersed retail network, Sunglass hut required
a solution to relieve corporate resources through the outsourcing of a
centrally managed lock and hardware program. Lock and hardware
replacement is an especially important program for Sunglass Hut
because of the high turnover of their store associates. The client
required a service provided with the ability to not only manage its
lock and hardware business, but to track and report critical
operational metrics to allow corporate headquarters to proactively
direct loss prevention and shortage management decisions. Sunglass Hut
had worked with other outsourced service providers but was
dissatisfied with results.?

Solution and Result

?Sunglass Hut first turned to Security Source to outsource its
Business Abuse service, whereby employees could report peer theft
anonymously through Security Source's call center. Security Source
used its call center to track and monitor critical data for the
client. Security Source was then able to leverage its core domain LP
expertise to present and report operational information back to the
client. The success of the initial rollout prompted Sunglass Hut to
expand the scope of the call center program for its Lock and Hardware
business. The client quickly reduced its monthly expenses by more than
$50,000 per month. The second operational success impelled Sunglass
Hut to utilize Security Source for more LP solutions, adding CCTV
service late in 1999 and utilizing a variety of LP products and covert
surveillance kits as part of its overall strategy.

SVM

Many retailers outsource the production, processing, and maintenance of gift cards.

?Because of SVM?s expertise in the gift card industry, retailers have
chosen SVM to completely manage their gift card program or market
their gift cards to businesses and consumers.?

?These partnerships include a variety of benefits including marketing
and sales coordination, lead generation, card inventory management,
and fulfillment to store locations.?

More Retail Chains Farm Out Real Estate Operations

Katz & Associates
?Outsourcing real estate functions allows retailers to keep costs in
line with growth, observers say. Chains in the early stages of growth
are especially turning to third-party firms for help with such things
as analysis of unfamiliar markets.?
?Loehmann?s, for one, relies on Pearl River, N.Y.-based Katz &
Associates for help with strategic planning, site selection and lease
negotiations. The arrangement allows Loehmann?s to control costs and
maintain the same level of staffing regardless of its growth plans,
says Glass.?

Some retailers are using third-party firms to supplement staff.

Staubach Retail

?Verizon Wireless, for example, enlisted Dallas-based Staubach Retail,
part of national real estate advisory firm The Staubach Co., two years
ago to help run its real estate operations in the South.?

?Staubach manages Verizon?s relationships with brokers and provides
market research services. And it has streamlined the company?s
site-selection process, says Dean Jones, Verizon Wireless? director of
real estate and facilities in the South. Verizon now uses fewer
brokers and requires them to provide the same information on potential
locations. ?We are getting better results than we had in the past,?
Jones said. The arrangement has allowed Verizon to stay flexible with
personnel.?

Kliger-Weiss Infosystems (KWI)

KWI is a $10+ million company that provides service to over 3,000 stores.

The Outsourcing Of Retail Services

?Currently, KWI has 98 clients and provides outsourcing services to
over 3,000 stores. KWI provides its clients with a complete end-to-end
solution that includes POS, inventory control, merchandising, and loss
prevention. KWI's Retail Management System can also accommodate
customer profiling and loyalty/reward programs. KWI's system consists
of its custom-designed back office/corporate software and Fujitsu's
POS software and hardware. KWI's software is run at the company's Port
Washington, NY, headquarters on a UNIX-based system. Until the advent
of the Internet, an AT&T frame relay connection networked stores to
KWI's host system. Today, approximately 80% of KWI customers use the
Internet to access their data at the host site 24 hours a day.?

(?)

?According to Kliger, companies can save up to 40% to 50% by
outsourcing services to KWI versus purchasing, installing, and
maintaining a system themselves. "While most retailers spend more than
2% of their sales on technology, retailers outsourcing to KWI can cut
that percentage in half," states Kliger. The bulk of the savings comes
from eliminating the need for IT personnel.?

Sounds like homework

Think about warehousing and transportation
- security, in store franchises, external merchandizers

At the crudest level 'manufacturing'

Think more about the value added by retaillers
- what do they really do ?
- compare them with the postal service (primarily bulk to cut - yet
retail attempts to concentrate consumers - the funnel turned upside
down)
