I am designing a website that will be informational; it will also have
links to vendors selling various products in the same category as my
website's 'theme.' How do I contact and negotiate fees as an
affiliate? What are typical fees I could earn in % of retail price of
products? Will cost of product determine fee percentage? Can I
negotiate for higher fees if I send lots of business to vendors? Any
websites offer this type of info?

Falconry,

Most companies run their affiliate programs through affiliate markets
like Commission Junction (http://www.cj.com) or LinkShare
(http://www.linkshare.com.)

You can set up a free account with either company and then browse all
the different companies that run their affiliate programs using CJ or
Linkshare. They provide the information about percentages, links,
earnings, etc. All you have to do is select the companies you would
like to be an affiliate for and use those links on your site.

Affiliate commissions vary from company to company--some are
percentages (from 5 to over 100% of the product's value) and some are
straight dollar amounts. CJ is nice because they offer a list that you
can sort so that the highest paying affiliate advertisers are at the
top. Negotiation typically won't be necessary, and with many large
firms, isn't possible.

Some affiliates offer higher commissions based on performance. The
summaries describing each company's program will include that
information, once you get into CJ. You can also browse each company's
web site for affiliate information. For example, WhiteCanyon, Inc.
sells security software. They have a CJ account and will allow you to
publish affiliate links on your site. You can find out about them
through CJ or by visiting this page on their site:
http://www.whitecanyon.com/whitecanyon-affiliates.php

If you're a really hot publisher (sending lots of quality traffic),
most companies will contact you and ask about how you can work
together to improve your relationship. That's the point when you'd be
able to ask for a better percentage.

A list of Commission Junction's affiliate programs can be found at

Good luck with your affiliate adventures!
