Question ID: 608967
Where do those who work at the White House park their cars? Do they
park somewhere away from the White House and get brought in, or do
they park in an underground garage? Just wondered. Seems like it would
take a lot of cars to get them all to work there.

I found where about half of the staff park, is that an acceptable answer?

Clarification of Question by johnny_appleseed-ga on 03 Jan 2006 06:32 PST
Yes, Cynthia, half of the answer would be great! Thanks! I think I
have already gotten a lot of the info from the comments posted...and
no, I do not have any nefarious reasons for wanting to know this...it
was just plain curiosity which was picqued by the realization of how
tight it is down near the White House, and the realization that they
must have a lot of folks who work there... and they need a place to
park, or they must all take public trans....and I kind of figured they
did not all take public trans...!
Answer
There is no answer at this time.

Don't know the percentage but a very large amount of people park in
"the Ellipse" between the White House and "the Mall".

This last one has a picture that must've been taken a million years
ago because it doen't look anything like that nowadays, but you get
the idea.

Apropos nothing, I felt a bit uncomfortable reading this question - I
began wondering if there were security issues with answering it.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with asking such an obviously
perplexing question. Just shows how the world climate affects the way
one might assess what should be harmless enough issues...

ha ha ohh geez we are turning into a nation of whimps...

considering we have the most efective armed forces the world has ever
seen, this does not bode well for the future. Have you ever seen a
whimp with power? it can get ugly, very ugly....

what would we have done if we new the person that asked the question
happened to be Muslim? report him to the NSA? lol unreal.

Mr. Roosevelt (Teddy) was fond of an African proverb 'speak softly and
carry a big stick' hope we never forget that.

If you would believe me, the entrance to the underground parking is
across the Potomic river, thus relieving the employees of dealing with
rushhour traffic in downtown DC. ;)

so I did a google search and found at
http://www.ncpc.gov/actions/pdf/2000/fa-mp192.pdf this info as it was
proposed in 2000;

"The historic park setting of the White House would be improved by the
removal of surface parking for staff. Currently, there are 1,140 staff
parking spaces around the Ellipse; West, South and East Executive
Avenues; 17th Street; State and Hamilton Places; and Jackson Place.
The cars would be moved to private parking facilities off-site and
ultimately to proposed underground parking garages. An Ellipse parking
facility (approximately 850 parking spaces) for staff parking and park
maintenance vehicles would be entered from portals on Constitution
Avenue at 16th Street, NW. Pedestrian portals would be constructed at
the intersections of E Street at 15th and 17th Streets. In addition, a
smaller parking facility (approximately 280 parking spaces) would be
constructed under Pennsylvania Avenue to the east of Blair House for
the use of motorcades, diplomatic and business visitors, and senior
staff. The two proposed facilities would accommodate nearly a
one-for-one replacement of surface parking spaces with underground
parking spaces."

"In accordance with Master Plan submission requirements, the CDP
includes a Transportation Management Plan (TMP). The plan identifies
existing and proposed practices that are used to manage the employee
transportation needs of an approximate workforce of 5,575 employees at
the numerous agencies contained within the project boundaries. The
existing and proposed parking level of approximately 1,140 closely
correlates with the Comprehensive Plan goal of one parking space per
five employees."

clams, although a funny satire it includes handy info; "Throughout the
book are goofy quotes and comments courtesy of the dimmest bulb in the
house, GW, and funny pictures and drawings that give us the inside
scoop into White House life, including parking allocations
(handicapped people are screwed) "

I think this is all very good but have you heard that Bin-Laden's
niece is now posing semi-nude .... doesn't sound like much but just
take a look at those pictures and tell me if that doesn't qualify as
terrorism?! What is the NSA doing about that!

My father worked at the white house for several years, he parked his
car in a nearby parking garage. Parking garages in the area have
reserved spots for white house staff as well as secret service
members.
