I didn't find an engraving but is this the image that the piece you are referring to was based upon? http://www.mobtowndesigns.com/campheatwole/images/truce.jpg tutuzdad-ga |

tutuzdad, Thanks for the image, but no, that isn't it. I actually saw the image I am asking about on a special on "The Christmas Truce" on the History Channel, but haven't been able to find out anything from them. I work in the art field, and am pretty sure it is from and engraving, even though I was only able to view it briefly. It is of interest that in the image you sent, the tree is almost exactly the same size in relationship to the soldier. Thanks again! |

Hi there, and season's greetings. Your description of the image you're looking for sounds quite similar to the link I provided earlier: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0330390651.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Can you explain how the image you remember differs from the above? Thanks, paf |

Well, that certainly is beautiful image, and the right kind of black and white look, and ofcourse the subject matter is perfect, but it isn't the one I'm looking for. I like it though. Thankyou! Hope the one I'm after turns up. The soldier in the image I am seeking, is slightly bent forward, and is bulkier looking than this one. Also, his eyes are very wide open looking, maybe even gloowing in the candlelight. The tree the soldier in my image is holding is larger than the one in this last image shown. |

I've been wondering if the engraving could have appeared in the Illustrated london News of the day, and indeed it seems that there was an illustration - but to find it ... http://www.theneworder.org/commentary/christmastruce.htm This is a most complete answer to a question about the Christmas Truce and gives many links, but not to that picture. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=320516 But here it is - the same one that Pafalafa found - with the source as title page of The Illustrated London News of 9. Jan. 1915. http://www.schooltimes.com/2003ST/centurysample.pdf It would appear that the link Tutuzdad gives is a still shot from the film that was made, as it is in color, and the film gives the ILN as a credit: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395968/companycredits Here is a site that mentions some of the war artists for the ILN, but not for that picture. You can click on the bottom of the site for the next year: http://www.iln.org.uk/iln_years/year/1914.htm There are a few books about the truce, and maybe one of them gives more information about the illustration. I imagine that the event was not photographed, thus that the illustration was based on a verbal description, and that the ILN picture 20 days later was the first representation of the incident. I'd give Paf credit for having found it. |
