Re: Adoption or other assumption of responsibility for four AIDS
orphans now in Kampala, Uganda. I am in frequent contact with an AIDS
orphan in Uganda who at 18 is head of his household which consists of
brothers 17, 10 and 10. Both parents have died of AIDS. A friend and
I are currently supporting the boys' education. The oldest has
recently graduated from high school, the 17 year old will graduate
within the next year, they should qualify academically for college
studies here at UNM Gallup. I am wondering about the possibility of
relocating all four to the U.S. - in which case I would assume
financial responsibility and could become the "parent" although
age-wise I would be more a grandparent. I am interested in exploring
the options for these boys. Can you help me research this????

Hi,

I've adopted internationally twice and am now adopting internationally
a third time. While I haven't adopted from Uganda, I did find a
little info that might help you:

http://uganda.adoption.com/
http://kampala.usembassy.gov/adoption.html
http://www.holtintl.org/uganda/faq.shtml (Holt is an excellent,
well-respected agency. Note that they say there is a residency
requirement, but the first source listed above seems to indicate that
this requirement has recently been lifted)
http://www.crin.org/organisations/viewOrg.asp?ID=965&name=Uganda+Foster+Care+and+Adoption+Association

The easiest thing to do would probably be to contact the embassy in
Uganda, explain your situation, and ask what options you have.
Although you see yourself in more of a grandparent role, I'm betting
that if adoption is possible, it will involve significantly less red
tape and provide "your" boys with the most opportunities (including
automatic and immediate American citizenship) possible.

Best wishes!
