My father has just died. I am his only child, his closest relative.
This week I must make arrangements for his funeral. I must go through
his belongings. I must investigate his finances. I assume that his
debts are greater than his savings. I would like to find an internet
resource that will give me some starting info on legal advice for this
type of situation. If he has savings, can I use these for his funural
arrangements or must I pay his creditors, etc? To what degree am I
responsible for handling his post-mortem financial affairs? Should I
and how do I find legal councel? etc? This death took place in
Pennsylvania. This is an instance of a low income parent (no estates,
etc)

Liontiger,
I am very sorry to hear about your loss. This is a free comment, not
an "answer" to your question.
This site may give you a start. Maybe the lawyer will offer you some
free advice about the question of debts and expenses. It has been
mentioned here that lawyers will sometimes give a free first
consultation by phone.

Here is another site that might help you:
http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/findlegalhelp/main.cfm?id=PA

Here is a very appropriate section from the the first site. Scroll
down about 1/3 of the page to see about "If the debts of an estate
exceed the assets"

You could also talk to someone in the county recorder's office.

Please note, as you can read in the disclaimer below, this in NOT
professional or legal advice.

Nonetheless, I hope it is of some help, Myoarin
