If needed assume size "000" capsules.
For the purposes of this question breakdown means "dissolve
sufficintly to empty contents into digestive tract".
The answer should point to specific evidence or research, or show the

  Your question, as asked, is very broad in scope, and is affected my
numerous factors, such as humididity, stomach pH, capsule coating,
capsule contents, the packing of the contents, etc. ?Magnesium
stearate (less than 1%) can be added to powders to increase their
"flowability" which makes filling capsules easier. However, magnesium
stearate is a hydrophobic compound and may interfere with the
dissolution of the powders.?

?Increasing the concentration of the polymer in a matrix system
increases the viscosity of the gel that forms on the capsule surface.
Therefore, an increase in the concentration of the polymer used will
generally yield a decrease in drug diffusion and drug release. An
increase in the concentration of polymer also tends to put more
polymer on the capsule surface. Wetting is more readily achieved so
gel formation is accelerated.?

What I'm asking about actually is the empty gelcaps you can fill with
anthyhnign that you can buy at the store. These would have no coating.

    Your clarification is appreciated. Perhaps I worded my sentence
poorly - I meant there are a broad number of factors that affect
capsule dissolution. What you meant , but did not mention in the
original question, was that you actually wanted dissolution times for
empty gelatin and/or vegetable/cellulose capsules, of the type you now
illustrate in your clarification.

Now that we have both clarified ourselves (making excellent use of the

So you see, over the counter empty gelatin capsules will dissolve
within a few minutes.Factors such as stomach acid and capsule content
can still affect the dissolution process. Each manufacturer may use a
different formulation or coating, so dissolution time will vary
somewhat. I have provided studies in the original answer to show the
time of capsule dissolution.

30 minutes to dissolve:

As you can see, there are no exact times for complete dissolution, as
capsule composition, contents, stomach acidity, condition of the
patient, etc. all come into play. I think you would be safe to assume
5-15 minutes for an over the counter gelatin capsule, and 20-45
minutes for vegetable/cellulose based capsules.
