Could the trouble be that I have let it go too long and it is just too
hard to do it? Starts off okay but then just comes back to square one
and starts again - does this all night - next morning just the same.
Do you know of any remedies other than taking all your data off to cd
and reformat drive and input all again. No good backing up to ghost
because you will come back with the same problems????

Sometning (like a screensaver or some other program or activity) is
restarting your defragger. Restart your computer in SAFE MODE. Make
sure NO OTHER PROGRAMS ARE RUNNING. Do your defrag here and restart
when you're done. Let me know if this results in a successful defrag
for you - I'm confident it will because I did it this way myself just
two nights ago for the exact same reason.

Thanks SO much for that - will do it when I leave work today on all 3
computers with same trouble. Yes, there are all sorts of little progs
that load unbeknownst when booting up in real mode - safe mode gets
runs withough all these? Must say it is an excellent observation you
made. I had thought of somehow trying to run defrag in the dos window,
but that is not a per se dos window - still comes from the real boot
up. Am looking forward to cleaning my disks up. Will let you know
tomorrow TIM

I look forward to your reply. At which time I can also tell you about
some cleaning programs that I use on my personal computers. I have no
interest in them other than the fact that I have used them and they do
indeed seem to work.

As I was about booting up in safe mode, I could only manage it on one
of the computers and have left that one defragging, and hope to see it
done when I get to work this morning. But I tried everything on the
other two to boot into safemode - I could boot up into dos, but said
must be in windows to use defragger. I tried going into setup and out
again - but still booted up in windows. How can I get it to boot up
into safe mode. Looked at help but nothing there. Funny how when you
dont want it to boot up into safe mode it will, but when you WANT it
to boot up in safe mode, I cant make it do it. Can you tell me how to
make it boot up in safe mode please?

Restart your computer. When it goes to black depress the F8 key and
hold it down until it boots. There will likley be a choice of
operations. Select the number that corresponds with SAFE MODE. It
should then boot up in safe mode.

The problem with your defragger is probably program interruption.
Alternatively you may be able to simply close all programs (even those
in your system tray) and disable any screensavers and defrag
successfully without going into safe mode. Ideally you should have
EVERY PROGRAM on your computer shut down before you begin in order for
defrag to work correctly without interruption.

Let me know.

Thanks SO much for that - I am going to try that F8 on this one at
home now and get this defragged. Will let you know how the one at work
went. Very much appreciated your kind attention.

Yes indeed - got to work and lo and behold - all done. Tried to do the
one at home on safemode, but said disk too much mistakes - fix. Tried
scandisk in realmode, but found it also popped out. So tried your
trick of running scandisk in safemode as well and left it on to see
when I get home.

Scandisked another computer at work here not being presently used, in
safemode and came out well. Is now defragging in safemode and is on
75% progress bar, looks good. 2 out of 3 here at work.

Just before I sign off and may I thank you again for helping me out
with something that has been troubling me for years, can you tell me
what you do about the scandisk advanced functions - on crosslinked
files do you go for delete make copies or ignore? Lost fragments - do
you free or convert to files?
Names to you check for invalid names, dates or duplicates. Do you tick
check host drive first, and do you bother about reporting dos name
lengths please?

Defragger and the problems associated with it - I know a bit about.
Scandisk? Well, that's another critter entirely. Perhaps that would be
a good question to post seperately considering the number of detailed
issues you are inquiring about.

Since it appears that my recommendations resulted in a successful
defrag, shall we consider your original question answered then? If you
are satisfied I'd like to make it "official".

you could also try a 3rd party defragmenting program such as Diskeeper
(it even has a 30-day trial period)!
