OK, here goes: I think the Motherboard went on my wifes computer. ? I
took out the hard drive & put in my Dell. The HD has WIN98. My Dell
has WinMe. It reads fine, but I need my computer. Someone gave us an
HP Pavillion with the HD missing and said it was running WIN XP. I put
the HD in the HP and it says it cannot read it. If you need the exact
error I can get it. After a while I was able to get a C: prompt if
that helps. I even tried moving the jumpers, no help.
I need to know what I have to do to get it to read this HD or what I
have to get or both. I am confused as how does the HP know ANYTHING
without its "brain", the hard drive????? Answer must solve problem
without large expense.

Hello cappy01,

Usually, all that is needed is to install a few drivers for new
hardware when moving a hard drive. The OS should not make a major
difference.

I have seen this with some Dell computers and solved it in a non
intuitive way. The solution was moving the jumpers not to MASTER as
one would expect, but to CABLE SELECT, even if in the master position
onthe cable. CS is the setting to try.

Do be sure it is on the primary controller cable and in the end
position, and try CS to see if that solves it for you and let me know
by posting a follow-up clarification.

Sorry about the health problems, cappy.

I was asking you to check to see if the CS jumper position caused this
to work for you as it does with some Dell computers. If not, if you
would post the error message, perhaps myself or another researcher can
find your problem. If it does work, I'll post as the answer.

Thanks.

Hi,

thanks, Yes, I need a Hernia Operation, been pretty sick. You do mean
jumpers on the HD, right? This Maxtor HD has no markings, so I dont
know which would be Cable Select. It has 5 pins on top, 4 on bottom
with the 2 clips.

Try this page for the jumper settings. Do NOT use the CLJ which limits
the drive capacity.

Hi,

So I move the one jumper to Cable Select and leave off the other?

Will try today.

thanks.

OK, I removed both jumpers & put one back on in the Cable Select pins
as shown in Maxtor diagram.

Started computer, get same error, "invalid system disk".

Should I try the CLJ ?

thanks.

Hi again,

I would not try the CLJ. It is used to limit the data that can be used
on a drive for drives being put in older computers. I do not know how
it would react in this case. Likely no damage, but it is possible.

If the drive was on the end of the ribbon cable on the primary
controller and did not work, I am out of ideas. If the drive did not
work in any computer, then the error message would have more meaning
and it would point to other cures. But since it works in some and not
in this particulacomputer, I am at a loss.

Perhaps another researcher will have other suggestions for you.

Good luck.

Before working on this hard drive I would get an external hard drive
and copy the hard drive to it. The information would then be
available while you tried to get the HD to work. In the worst case,
you get a HD that will work and then use the info on the external HD.

I'm not sure if this applies to your situation or not, but in some
cases the OS will check the hardware configuration, and will not run
if the hardware is too different from what it expects. (This is to
prevent someone from running the same copy of the OS on several
computers). Last year I changed the motherboard on my HP Pavillion
(running Win XP) and the OS would not run until I did a full reinstall
of the OS.

If the OS detects different hardware in the way you are mentioning it
will simply request re activation.

Moving an HD to a different computer, remember, requires different
BIOS settings, HS drivers etc.

The worst case is to reinstall Windows in a different directory. The
XP install disc should give you the option to dual boot. If not,
enter a different directory for the install.

If you got the C: prompt then the HD is recognized by the system!
Try this:
Make a Windows 98 Setup Disk (floppy). I have done this a number of
times, but forget my rusty memory, I have not done this in a couple of
years. Therefore, you will just have to find where stuff is. The
utility should be somewhere.
Insert the floppy disk and select "boot with CD drive support".
Now try typing fdisk at the A:> prompt. That should list your HD.
Now you can either format the HD first or insert a Windows 98/Me/XP
disk and type D:\Setup.exe to install the operating system.

Try this. If you have any questions, post it here. I can do more
information/diggin/etc.

If you are asking me:

First get the Win98 Recovery floppy to give you the A:> prompt then
play with settings. First hard drive should be set to Master or Cable
select and other to Slave or Cable select.
