Some family members want to send a few computer equipment items from
the US to South Africa for me. They are new, and this would be a gift;
the value is about $600, and the weight is about 6 pounds. It will be
sent standard airmail.
Main question: how much tax will I have to pay on this (South African) side?
First, is the amount different if it is a gift? Some countries will
allow gifts of a certain value to escape tax.
Second, what percentage of value would I have to pay on the
gift/import, if I indeed must?
Third, I'd like to know the site(s) on which you found this information.
You do not need to answer this part of the question to get paid, but
if you have, based on your findings, a recommendation of the cheapest
way to acomplish this feat, I'm all ears. Thanks! |

Howdy nathaniel1977-ga,
I have gathered a good amount of information in order to answer your
question, but it might make a difference to know:
- The exact items that are going to be shipped to yot, that is, a
computer, a printer, etc.
- Where (nearest urban area, city) in South Africa the equipment will
be shipped.
Thanks!
Unfortunately, your shipment will not fall under the "gift" allowance
which is currently R400 (around US$63) twice a year.

thanks, denco-ga; i look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Sucks that I don't fall into the gift category!
The items are for a multimedia art installation I am working on, for
an exhibition in April. They will most likely be shipped here in mid-
to late-January, and are:
<a href="http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWire410-main.html">the
m-audio firewire 410</a>
and <i>four pairs</i> of hi-quality computer speakers, most likely the
<a href="http://www.creative.com/products/speakers/i-trigue/">creative
labs i-trigue 2200</a>.
The former is available in South Africa, but is about twice the price,
and the latter, or comparable quality for the same price, I have not
seen. given that i need four pairs, i want the best deal for quality.
I am based in (they will be shipping to) Riviera, Johannesburg, South
Africa - in the zip code 2193. The exhibition, however, will take
place in Cape Town, April or May, 2006. Thanks!
