I'm in a long distance relationship and it gets hard some times. I was
wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make a safe device,
something like a pillow with a speaker and microphone that would hook
up to my phone allowing me to sleep next to my girlfriend even though
we are so far away.

What might be much less expensive and more fun would be a laptop with
a web cam, going over a Yahoo, MSN or Jabber connection. You could
leave it running all night, it could sit on the night stand, if your
webcam has a microphone (which most do, you could lay in bed and talk
to each other.

is it because you want to sleep next to your girlfriend, or is it
because talking to your girlfriend puts you to sleep?

you might want to use something called handsfree device ;-)... 

you might want to use the bluetooth handfree kit for more convenience.
