What you do about the scandisk advanced functions - on crosslinked files do you go for delete make copies or ignore? Lost fragments - do you free or convert to files? Names to you check for invalid names, dates or duplicates. Do you tick check host drive first, and do you bother about reporting dos name lengths please? Bear in mind that I am not all that literate with computers and whereas there may be mileage in making duplicates, it is hardly worth so doing if I dont know what to do with the duplicates. |

Smells like Win98SE. Have been a couple of years... The answer is: does not matter, because you will not recover the error with any of these settings! Some will just generate files in your C: directory (the convert to files option) but you can open them, and since most of the files are not text nowadays, the files are junk anyways. However (btw, a pic would be appreciated to refresh my memory) Crosslinked -- make copies. Will kinda help Lost fragments -- convert to files. These will appear in C:\ as Scandisk000.txt I think. You will recognize because there could be a lot of them with 000 different for each one. If they are small, you could open them in Notepad to see if it is your text file portion that crashed. If not, most of your files seem to be there, just deleted 'em when you see 'em. Invalid and stuff -- check Check host -- doesn't matter much now, but check yeah. Reporting -- yes Sir! Like I said, these are about the right choices. However, it is important in 98SE/Me to check the option in the defragmenter to check the drive for errors first. And usually first check for errors and then defrag a couple of times in a month. With Windows XP this becomes much less important. |

Bit difficult to send a pic in this box, but have copied it from tk8 note. No wonder you were a bit confused - it was really a question of scandisk not defragger as such. Defragger only came into the question when run, because it executed scandisk first. It is indeed win98se, but you seem to have picked up the question pretty well - and I am sure answered in full. What you are saying is that may as well make copies in C:\ as I can go in and see if any text there. But like you say most is unusable and delete anyway. What I am afraid of is that very often you get a message when booting up to say cant find file - and that worries me, although it makes no diff to opsys. Usually it is some exe downloaded, and somehow its got deleted but not the .dll part and you cant even find the initial install to reinstall and uninstall. I agree with copies but if I am just going to delete them later - may as well tell prog to delete? Otherwise you have explained all and you can close this question satisfactorily please?
