In MS Outlook, with nothing in the outbox, when I hit send/receive
the status line in lower right indicates sending 1 of 7 messages.
I have run Norton antivirus repeatedly, with current subscription and
all updates. Have run Spyware Dr and CCleaner too. Very concerned.
What do you think is going on here?

You may have some read receipts that are being sent which won't show
up in your outbox.

See if this helps:

Here's a similar case:

Please let me know if the above solution works.

Best wishes,

I also had the same problem and it was quite disconcerting!
A person at Microsft who develops Outlook replied to what it is here in this thread
http://www.alegsa.com.ar/N/i42/Sending%20phantom%20messages.php

There were bugs in Outlook 2003, if you deleted a message without ever
opening it AND that message had a read receipt an outgoing e-mail was
sent without you requesting it. The Microsoft Developer says they
fixed the bugs in Service Pack 1 but I am going to keep my eye on this
because I think once in a while I am still sending out these phantom
messages. Outlook should ask you if you want to send a Read recept or
not and the bug was that it wasn't always asking.

Great question, I have been wondering about that myself so I was happy
to poke around and check it out once you mentioned it.

It's possible you may have selected to automatically send read
receipts to emails that request them. But that option can be
customized. Try going to "Tools," "Options," "Email Options," and then
"Tracking Options." In the lower part of the window you'll see three
buttons that will allow you to select "Always," "Never," or "Ask me."
Selecting "Never" or "Ask" may take care of the problem.

also i would jsut get rid of outloook and swith to an internet mail
program like g-mail so its not storing all those emails on your hard
drive. plus you never have to worry about your hard drive crashing and
you can check it from anywhere in the world.
