Hi gingerscot,

just want to make sure that you mean "Private Branch eXchange" when
you use the acronym PBX?

Dear Gingerscot,

The sort of information I was able to find includes PBX market sales,
lines shipped, and suppliers. Unfortunately, I was not able to find
the PBX sales for the corresponding suppliers.

If what I have were to interest you, please let me know,
Claudietta

That info sounds fine.

Gingerscot,

The figures I have are running figures from 1991 to 2003. Actual
figures are for 1991-1999, but are estimated for 2000-2003. I noted
that you are looking for 1996 and 2001 figures.

Let me know if you still want these. I apologize for not reading your
question well enough,

Claudietta

...also, I am assuming your request is not for IP PBX. I only found
one article with IP PBX revenues and lines for 2001, and estimates up
to 2006.

I could post these if they are of use to you,
Claudietta

Claudietta

The figures for the years you've got will do great.
The IP PBX port figures will be useful.

Thanks in Advance

Dear G,

Since the data is so diverse, I wasn’t sure how to summarize it. I do
believe it is self-explanatory, so I will leave it mostly as is and
have broken it in ten parts. Parts 1-7 are data that you are looking
for. Parts 8-10 give you a bit more background in the market size and
market share. Most of it is global, but some is for the US. Make sure
you read source descriptions carefully.

Also my industry readings, I determined that the following were the
top suppliers of PBX systems. I provided the 2001 total revenues for
the parent companies, mostly. However, most have numerous
subsidiaries, and I don’t know which subsidiary produces PBX.

Alcatel ($166,305m)
Avaya ($6,793m)
Avaya Communications ($750m)
Ericsson ($66.1m)
Lucent ($21,294m)
Mitel ($365.5m)
NEC ($1,200m)
Nortel ($1,000m)
Philips? ($71,266m)
------------------------------
In another database search, I pulled out the top ten companies whose
business descriptions explicitly stated producing PBX systems. I
provided the total revenues for 2001.

1. NEC America, Inc. ($1,200m)
2. Nortel Networks Corporation ($1,000m)
3. ThyssenKrupp AG ($937.0m)
4. ITT Industries, Cannon / Switch Products ($500m)
5. JPM Company ($173.7m)
6. Applied Innovation Inc. ($73.0m)
7. Ericsson Enterprise ($66.1m)
8. SpectraLink Corp. ($60.8m)
9. Intecom, Inc. ($53.5m)
10. Hitachi Telecom (USA), Inc. ($35.5m)

There’s a whopping amount of research on the PBX market, whether
Legacy, IP-based systems or wireless PBX. Much of it is only for
purchase available through market research companies, especially in
the detail that you’re seeking. The following outlines what’s
available, in priority order:

Frost & Sullivan’s April 23, 2001 report on the U.S. PBX market is
quoted by several vendors. For example, an NEC press release notes
that it’s market share was 29.4%, 'almost that of its closest
competitor in the maturing PBX arena which was valued at a whopping
US$1.68 billion in 2001.' Siemens uses the same study to claim a 15%
market share in North America.

The Frost & Sullivan report is titled “Traditional PBX and Key
Systems” and is available at www.frost.com for $3,450. It includes
the historical detail that you’d requested.

Gartner Group’s Dataquest research unit has also tracked the PBX and
key-telephone systems markets over the time period required. Their
report, PBX/KTS and PCX Market Share and Forecast, 2001, includes
(1996 through 2000), forecasts (2001 through 2005) and market share
estimates. Though more expensive, the Gartner report is much easier
to find referenced on-lilne:
http://www4.gartner.com/Init

Eastern Management Group has numbers similar to those you’re seeking
for Q2, 1998:
http://www.easternmanagement.com/news/a_2q98.htm

They have these rankings:

Total market: 1.8 million lines (for Q2)

1.	Lucent Technologies: 32.8% share (lines); 23.8% (systems)
2.	Nortel: 26.4% (lines)
2.	Mitel: 19.3% (systems)

Phillips Infotech has several reports on the PBX market, including
this one on service & maintenance areas. It rates vendors in services
by market share, putting Lucent first; Williams Communications 2nd;
Siemens 3rd and Norstan 4th:
http://www.phillips-infotech.com/press8-31.html

And finally, Wintergreen Research has a report available for $2,275
that discusses the market:

The NEC quotation above is supposed to read 'almost twice that of its closest
competitor in the maturing PBX arena which was valued at a whopping
US$1.68 billion in 2001.'

Hi Omnivorous.

Thank's I've got the Eastern Management Group report. I think it just
covers the US for some numbers & NAFTA region for other numbers. I'll
take a look at the Gartner site & see if their report looks useful.

Cheers

Gingerscot --

I'd talked with a former colleague who works for a communications
research company that DOESN'T cover the PBX market. He suggested
checking Business Communications Review, a monthly publication that
covers the industry. Indeed, they track PBX systems and features
(including ports/unit) closely. There's lots of information about the
switch to IP telephony; excellent reports on attempts by corporations
to implement IP telephony; and forums for discussion of PBX issues.

You can find BCR here. Note the link to their PBX reports on the home
page:
http://www.bcr.com/

The BCR site's search is powered by Atomz (sorry Google!) and returns
132 articles or forum comments on the search term 'PBX.' Though none
really treat market share, you can quickly scan the resources
available - and identify who some of the experts are in the business.

Happy circuit-switching,

Omnivorous-GA
