I am looking for a ranked list of all New York State school districts
based upon data results obtained from the "School District Report
Cards". In this way, I can determine how a school in Essex County
New York may rank against another schools statewide (performance
index). Data has been obtained for each school district already
(within the School District Report card is a "System of Accountability
for Student Success" (SASS) section which consolidates the different
areas of performance) -- I am interested to view this data in an
expanded comparison. The Dept. of Education tells me that they do
not have any statewide school achievement comparison list available.
Has anybody done this?

Hi ejp-ga,

I did some digging, and it seems that data regarding the SASS is only
being calculated for each individual school (generally grouped by
elementary/middle/high schools), and not for districts as a whole. Are
you trying to get at the average overall score for each district? If
this is what you want, you will not be able to easily obtain it since,
I repeatedly saw pages stating something about the enforcements "going
into effect after 2003" so it seems that these scoring systems are not
fully implemented as of yet.

In the mean time, you you may find this interesting - it is a document
explaining the reasoning and implementation of the SASS:

Thank you for your inquiry. I am interested in the SASS data on a per
district basis (which already exists) simply taken to the level of a
statewide school comparison (which does not appear to exist at the NYS
Dept. of Education ).

I think the term "school district" takes on different meanings. In
rural NYS it implies individual K-12 schools, whereas in more
populated areas of the state, I believe it can mean several different
school systems under one district. I am of course, not adverse to
finding this data on an individual school basis which would further
break down the data in more populated areas but this would probably be
even more difficult to locate. I am going to look at the SASS link
you recommended now.

I think I need to better clarify my clarification--I am confusing
myself!

Looking back over the format of the SASS data I have for my local
school district, it does split the data into individual schools within
the district i.e. Elementary, Middle & HS. This is fine but does not
give me any means to compare this data with other schools in the state
at a glance. I would find to see a statewide performance ranking
system based on this data.
